I'm interested to see if they actually allow a league such as the CHL to play for it.
It wouldn't be the CHL

If it is awarded and I wholly doubt it will be, it will go the next level professional league, the AHL.

No CHL league will get it. No winner of the Memorial Tournamet will get it.

Just like in 2005, the cup will not be awarded to anyone.

If they do award it, you think the Canadian trustees would award the Stanley Cup (which was created to be given to the top amateur league in Canada) to a league that mostly has American teams?

They do now in the NHL, why would the AHL be any different?

Anyone know where we can find the trust deed for the trust that controlls the Stanley Cup? It ought to be public.

Could teams from a women league challenge for it? From a Junior league? From the KHL? From the AHL?
I propose two leagues with a lot NHL players in it.
Let the winner of The AHL versus the winner of The KHL compete for the Cup in a seven games series. On both small and big rinks.
Would have bean great fun.

Hypothetically speaking, what's to stop a mob of Canadians from invading the HHOF, taking the Cup and drawing up rules to award it this year, I mean, what Police officer or judge in Canada would dare tell them to do otherwise, cause I seriously doubt anyone would really try to stop them, all you would need is a flash mob of a couple hundred people or so. I think any Canadian with an ounce of Patriotism and National Pride should think this is a viable alternative

I think the thought of themselves being arrested is what's stopping them. Also, inciting to riot is illegal, so whoever organized this could be charged with that, along with other crimes such as robbery..

Also, I doubt a league would want to use the Stanley Cup if it was stolen.

The Stanley Cup has little to no meaning to me outside of the NHL context, so I wouldn't care. It's just another trophy in that sense if its stripped of the history and meaning that comes with it being associated with the NHL.

How many teams won't survive this lockout & will relocate or fold within the next few years after the lockout ?

Given the 2006 Ontario Court rulling that the cup trustees have the right but not the obligation to decide who would get a chance to compete for the cup if there is not NHL season, and given the fact that those same trustees said many and many times they will not award the SC to anyone else but an NHL team...is this debate still worth it ?

That WOULD be fun. Great idea!

SOME team's name, engraved on the Cup, is a hell of a sight better than another blank square.

Hockey Canada will need to get a team ready for the world championships in May. Why not have a Canada v USA series for the Stanley Cup in April? Then both sides go on to the worlds.

Obvious ploy to award Canada the cup is obvious.

I would almost guarantee that if the NHL is in a position they have to award a cup to a non-NHL team, they will make sure it does not go to a KHL team.
