Man he's been awesome this season in the Czech Republic.

Imagine if he can carry this momentum into an NHL season if we are to have one for 2012-13.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

His PPG (points per game) is up to 1.69 49 Pts in 29 games, while the leader in points (Ruziska) I think I misspelled his name has 1.71 PPG 53 Pts in 31 games.

He sure doesn't look 40 does he?

One thing I've noticed from the games is his confidence seems to be back. Above everything else, when Jagr was successful in the past (despite his fatigue level, body weight, speed, strength or health) it was his confidence that was at the forefront of this success.

Case in point Jagr in 2005-06 (after a few years of being average to good), he returned to being the best player in the NHL despite weighing 245 lbs and being much slower than he was in Pittsburgh.

Case and point 2, 2006-07; he struggled most of the season with his shoulder injury and recovering from it, his confidence was down and he didn't look so dominant. Then he seems to have gotten his confidence back in the last month of that season and then he was as dominant as ever and played that way in the playoffs.

Case and point 3, 2007-08, he looked rather out of shape and tired all season long and crawled to a 71 Pts finish (although the last few games he looked to be back). Then the playoffs started and Jagr declared he was ready to dominate which he did.
15 Pts in 10 playoffs games and was the best player of those playoffs through 2 rounds including outplaying Crosby and Malkin in the New York/ Pittsburgh series.

Jagr seems to be confident again and wants the puck and wants to lead the team. I know it's not the NHL but if he can display the same type of attitude in the NHL once it resumes then I don't see why he can't still be a dominant player even at this stage of his career.

Last year in Philadelphia, it took him a good 10 games to reaccustom himself to the NHL game after playing on the big ice for 3 seasons. Then he was playing at a very high level for the next 30 games or so, even hovering around the PPG mark for the first half of the season. The only thing that was off was that first he seemed to differ to Giroux on the ice and second he wasn't commanding the puck or his position along the half walls on the powerplay. Then of course he got injured and never really recovered; struggling with the reoccuring groin/ hip and as well falling out of favor with Laviollette's system and seeing his icetime reduced.

I personally think it will be different in Dallas. He will be given more responsibilities on the offense and will be asked to carry more of the load and to also run the powerplay.

I see Jagr more so resembling the 2006-07 (last month of that season and playoffs) and 2007-08 playoffs Jagr than the 2011-12 Jagr.

I'm assuming Jagr didn't put the team on his back and score 4 goals in the last minute?

Jagr got the lone goal for Kladno.

Make that 30 games, 23 goals, 27 assists and 50 Pts for a PPG of 1.67.

What's that now? 55 Pts in 32 games for a PPG of 1.72?

Yeah, he's really making a run for the Czech scoring title now:

Ruzicka 34-29-27-56 (team 34 GP)
Jagr 32-24-31-55 (team 35 GP)

I think there's 17-18 games left.

Oh man I hope not.

If he wins the scoring title, the NHL season was cancelled, and Jagr probably never plays for the Dallas Stars.

Would like to see NHL hockey again, but they only have another week or two to sort this out, right? If there is NHl season, great. If not, there are KHL & Czech playoffs... and a best on best World Championship.

Top 6 after ~35 games for each team:

Ruzicka 35-30-29-59
Jagr 32-24-31-55
Gulas 35-25-25-50
Plekanec 32-21-25-46
Vlasak 31-13-31-44
Straka 33-14-30-44

You should think twice before ridiculing these players:

- Straka had a long NHL career, very good player

- Vlasak was 2nd in goals & 3rd in points/assists in top Finnish league... 2nd in goals, 1st in points and 4th in assists in top Russian league... and only one player in > 10 years has more points in Czech season than his 68 points in 2011 when he led in goals & points

- Gulas is in his prime (27) and having a career year

- Ruzicka is also in his prime (27) and having a historic season in Czech league: No one has more than 38 goals in Czech season from '94-present... he has 30 G in 35 games, with 17 to play. He has 59 point in 35 games, trying to beat record of 78 points.

The problem is that some foreign players are smaller and/or not physical, like Morozov and Radulov in KHL, so better for them to stay overseas.

This actually looks to be a historic season in the Czech Republic league ('94-'13) for Ruzicka and possibly Jagr:

Most goals '94-'13:
--------------------------
38 Moravec '98
37 Sykora '07 (not the player who played mostly in NHL)
37 Ujcik '96
37* Janku '95
35 Prochazka '07
34 Ton '10
33 Hlavac '99
33* Prochazka '95
33* Kral '94
32 Marek '03

30 M.Ruzicka '13 (pace=44.6)
25 Gulas '13 (pace = 37.1)
24 Jagr '13 (pace = 36.8)

*includes playoffs
note: pace based on GPG and if played all remaining games

Ruzicka could set the record, while Jagr and Gulas have a good chance at finishing near the top.

Some of the best GPG
----------------------------
1.08 Caloun '05 (24 GP)
0.95 Ujcik '96 (39 GP)
0.92 Rucinsky '95 (13 GP)
0.86 M.Ruzicka '13 (35 GP)
0.75 Jagr '13 (32 GP)

0.75 Moravec '98 (51 GP)
0.74 Sykora '07 (50 GP... again, not NHL Sykora)
0.73 Jagr '95 (11 GP)

Ruzicka and Jagr could finish with highest GPGs in 40+ games.

Most Points
----------------
78 Prorok '98
77 Kral '00
75* Patera '94
73 Cervenka '10
73 Horak '97
70 Vyborny '99
70* Prochazka '95
69 Hrbek '98
68 V.Ruzicka '96
68 Vlasak '11
68 Leska '02
68 Bednar '09

59 M.Ruzicka '13 (pace = 87.7)
55 Jagr '13 (pace = 84.2)

Whichever wins the race may set the record.

Some of the best PPG
-----------------------------
2.00 Jagr '95 (11 GP)
1.84 V.Ruzicka '96 (37 GP)
1.72 Jagr '13 (32 GP)
1.69 Rucinsky '95 (13 GP)
1.69 M. Ruzicka '13 (35 GP)
1.65 Jagr '05 (17 GP)

1.63 Caloun '05 (24 GP)
1.57 Kral '00 (49 GP)

Again, very good chance to set record for 40+ games.

I don't want to jinx it just yet but it seems that a 48 games season is looking more like a reality after this supposed progress achieved by the National mediator today in the NHL.

Considering how well Jagr has played all season long in the Czech Extraliga, the fact they play on NHL size rinks, the fact that he's lighter and faster and seems far more confident in his ability to dominate games (like he did in his glory days), what are the chances of him challenging for the Art Ross this year?

Can you elaborate on this answer?

Last season in his first 40 games, he had 41 Pts and was 9th in league in scoring, this despite only having 3 Pts in his first 7 games of the season and this despite taking time to readjust to the faster game on the smaller ice after being away from it for 3 seasons. Jagr knows how the new faster NHL is, don't you think his losing weight and getting faster had something to do with that? I'm not saying Jagr is as good as Lemieux, but back in 2002-03, at age 40 bad back and all, Lemieux was playing at a 150 Pts pace in his first 50 games or so. Jagr is in much better shape than Lemieux was at the same age. You are really selling him short I think.

Most fans that follow Jagr, people that have actually watched him play in the Czech league will tell you he looks much better than he did last season at any point including the first half of the season before his injury.

The Flyers didn't even play a puck possession game and they barely used Jagr correctly on the powerplay where he usually operates on the right half boards, instead he was always out of position. The Dallas from all indication better suite Jagr's style of puck possession game. At 220-225 lbs he's still stronger than 90% of the league and he will always have the body and size to shield the puck from opposing players. Now add the fact that he's got the speed factor again, I think he will be much better than anyone expects.

The criticism on Jagr last season was that he no longer had the legs to skate with the fast paced NHL, well that is clearly not an issue this season.

In a 48 game season, older players don't have to pace themselves all season long and they can play all out every night. Jagr's been tearing up a league where they play on NHL size rinks with a lot of good quality players. A study was done a few years ago that says that 74% of the points scored in the Czech Extraliga translate to NHL points. That means's Jagr's 1.67-1.72 PPG would translate to 1.24 -1.27 PPG meaning in 48 games that's 60 to 62 Pts. I can tell you that not many players can put up that many points in the NHL. Sure Ovechkin, Malkin and Kovalchuk who are always in the running for the Art Ross are in game shape, but other guys like Crosby have been just training without any real game setting.

Jagr would show up to training in complete game shape. I really think those who aren't giving him a chance will be vastly surprised this year.

I wouldn't bet on it either, but I'll happily be proven wrong if he does pull it off.

livewell68, first I'd like to say those are excellent points, and I'd add that both his linemates will likely be close to game shape as well.

Jamie Benn hasn't played in a few weeks, but he played enough in Germany. Loui Eriksson is still playing now.

However, because of the shorter season and the fact Jagr has never played in the West, I don't know that I believe he can be an Art Ross candidate. For one thing, think about him many divisional games Dallas will be playing. You're probably talking about 10 to 14 games against PHX and LA. He's going to be playing some very solid, very physical defensive teams in Dallas.
