Brock Holt is a damn good pickup. I wonder if they'll try him out at SS. He and Pedroia will be dynamite. Great trade for the Sox.

Middle infielder with a very solid OBP and enough speed to be interesting. Good find.

Still bummed about Cody, wish they re-upped him. And holding out hope that they will still be looking for another outfielder. I think their depth is questionable there; and Gomes is better suited as a fourth that gets good playing time.

I don't mind this trade with the Pirates though; I think Holt will give them some good depth in the middle of the infield, and Hanrahan is an improvement over Melancon. I don't think any of those four players were going to figure in to the Sox plans this year or going forward.

Brock Holt.

With a name like that he's destined to be a fan favorite

Basically.

Maybe Melancon rediscovers himself in Pittsburgh, but it certainly looked like he was overmatched in Boston.

I don't think any of the three prospects ever has a signficant major league career.

very intrigued by Brock Holt. everywhere he's been he has hit for a good average and seems to have solid speed. not much power but it seems like he could end up being a good MLB player. I don't really understand why the pirates included him in this deal

LOH.

Guy can barely play second base. Be happy if he can be an effective pinch hitter/runner.

1) Because they don't know how to trade.

2) They have Neil Walker....who they will end up looking to trade as soon as he wins in arbitration.

Did Boston pick up a compensation draft pick when Loney signed with Tampa Bay ????

Nope you can not get comp from a half year rental.

Witch is why if a team trades for Ellsbury now and lose him they get a pick, at the deadline and lose him they have nothing to show.

I think he was kidding, even with the old rules, Loney wouldn't have netted the sox a pick.

My guess is that he'll be a bench guy to start.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's false. Pretty sure under the old rules to earn a compensation pick, the club needed to offer arbitration and have them sign with another team, or have that player sign before the arb deadline with another team.

Think of what Theo and the Sox did with Felipe Lopez a few years ago. They signed him at the end of 2010 after he was released by the Cards. Had a team signed him, he would've gotten the Sox a sandwich pick.

Not true, they get the player(s) traded for Ellsbury at deadline.

He means draft picks. he is correct.

"Only players who have been with their clubs for the entire season will be eligible for compensation."

I forgot about the new compensation rules. I was hoping we could do with Loney what we did with Billy Wagner in 2010. Wagner signing with Atlanta got us 2 extra picks in the 2010 MLB Draft - the 20th overall pick ( 2B Kolbrin Vitek ) and the 39th overall pick ( Pitcher Anthony Ranaudo ). Not a bad return for a guy that we got from the Mets for 2 spare parts ( Chris Carter and Eddie Lora ) and that only pitched 13.2 innings with the Red Sox.

Jim Bowden on ESPN Insider thinks Boston should trade Bogaerts, Barnes, and Jacobs for J. Upton.....I'm sure I'm not the only one here who wouldn't even consider that. When will people realize the Upton's are overrated?

They are, but not as overrated as the Red Sox prospects...
