I'm a night owl, so I'll be watching Canada/Germany. Can't wait to take a good look at Danault and McNeill.

Thought McNeill and Danault were both fine in the game today, outside of McNeill's turnover that lead to a goal. I know alot of people will see the game and then post about McNeill's turnover/game later today, but keep something in mind when evaluating McNeill's play today and I don't think he was really bad, despite the turnover:

Because he was a late addition to the team, he's had the most hectic week of all the Canadian players and this was also his first game action with Team Canada.. unlike everyone else, McNeill wasn't given a chance to get some of the nerves out and gel with linemates in pre-tournament play.

If nothing else, McNeill was great at faceoffs. Per IIHF's statistics, he won 12-of-13.

Which is one of the reasons why I wanna see him succeed with us (Blackhawks fan, plays with heart, etc.) He's a very good faceoff man (with Prince Albert and will be during this tournament). They said the coach likes him because he wins key faceoffs, and I'm glad he has the confidence to put McNeill as a PK'er. Still has alot to work on, but I still like him. Danault was pretty good. Just a horse out there. Definitely the type of player you win cups (or in this case a gold medal) with.

And then messed up by taking a 2+2 for highsticking at the end of the 3rd, causing Russia to lose a point.

Not a good day for Blachawks prospects...no points forany of McNeill,Danault,Teravainen, and Shalunov...in addition 2 bonhead plays by McNeill and Shalunov cozt their teams goals...Shalunov taking that double minor for a cross-check to the face of a Slovak with Russia up by a goal and with only about three and a half minutes left in the third was just unforgiveable..McNeill was good on faceoffs with 12/13 but be only had 1 shot....Danault and Teravainen no points but at least mustered 5 SOG's each...keep shooting..goals should come!

i actually was pretty impressed with germany - they were better than the score indicated. their offense was good. still, they're a weaker team, so it wasn't great for them to score three times against us. i would put it more on our defense than subban. still...he worries me

...And each prospect is better off developmentally for being at a best-on-best tournament, rather than back at juniors. Cut McNeill some slack too, as he didn't have the advantage of playing in the pre-tourney games.

danault is probably the best defensively of our forwards. mcneil was very good at faceoffs. i don't know his total wins for the game but i think he only lost one or so.

I don't get the Shalunov suspension.. to me, it looked like he was getting his hands up to protect himself. Obviously, he has to be more careful and he's responsible for his stick, but I don't think it was worth a suspension.

I actually thought Shalunov had a pretty good game despite taking that double-minor that cost Russia a point. He's playing with 2013 draft eligible forward Valeri Nichushkin, who is, by far, the most selfish player on team Russia.. which is saying something. I don't think I saw him make one pass in the offensive zone.. Shalunov was open a few times on the rush and in the offensive zone and Nichuskin would just hold onto it and turn it over by trying to do everything himself.

First off, I haven't seen this young Russian play, but my first impression was he was scared to get hit and it was more a reflex thing. Hopefully it's just a one off and this kid plays tougher than that on a regular basis.

I agree with this. Looked a little too absent-minded to be intentional.

Shalunov had two big hits earlier in the game.. he's not going to be a banger, but he's not timid. He got his hands up in a defensive reflex; protecting himself. Unfortunately, he got his hands higher than he probably wanted to.
