Um....potential, or some ****????

Even if Johnson does start playing his A game consistently, he basically becomes Dan Girardi

Johnson's younger and has the higher potential. Girardi is performing significantly better right now.

I choose Girardi. Super consistent, plays at a high level, stud defensively while being respectable offensively. Pretty reasonable contract that's unlikely to get much higher. Johnson, if he ever puts it all together could be better, but right now, only his hype would put him ahead of Girardi.

Girardi now... Hopefully Johnson future. There is a 4 year age gap between them right now. That's huge in terms of development. Like other Avs fans have said, if Johnson could find consistency from one night to the next, he would be the better player. One night he plays 25+ minutes and controls the game every time he is on the ice, and then the next night he plays 18 minutes and goes -3. Hopefully with age and experience the variance between levels in his play shrinks.

If EJ plays his regular game consistently like it looked like he was going to do before his back injuries hit, he's superior to Girardi.

Potential doesn't even play into it, EJ's best games as an Av were better than Girardi's. The problem is he hasn't put a season together of those games yet, but Girardi did.

Such an East Coast Bias in this thread, Id be willing to bet 75% of the people voting Girardi have simply never seen EJ play, and are just basing there opinion off the rumors and what not of HF Boards.

Anyone who saw EJ play last year after his groin injury would not be calling this easily.

Girardi has a slight advantage right now, but that will change as soon as next year. I take EJ. Especially when you take into consideration the teams each player played for, and the goalies that were playing behind them.

There is not a single objective source that would suggest that.

Oh, look who it is. I voted Girardi, but please get out. We don't need to hear again just how bad you think EJ is.

Seriously, Johnson is a sad excuse of a hockey player. The guy hasn't improved at all since being drafted. Sad.

It's alright Avs fans. No one can touch Dan "Norris Trophy" Girardi. I kid you not, Rangers analyst Al Trautwig claimed he was deserving of the trophy January of last year

I said Johnson was currently in the same ballpark as Girardi, didn't say he was better.

And (to the bolded), wat

Look at the username. If you don't know what I mean, look through his previous posts. He stated that Regin is Zetterberg with slightly less offense in the past. Look at some of his offers for players. Methot+3rd seems to be a favorite. His username is missing a "never" in it. Remove the "always" and it would be correct. Calling Johnson a sad excuse of a hockey player is just another clueless ignorant post in a long line of them.

Johnson has improved and become quite consistent defensively for the Avs, the problem is that he isn't always willing to push the game offensively. He has the potential to absolutely dominate games offensively and defensively and there were a few games where he did this, but not enough. There were just too many games where he decided to play it safe instead of rushing the puck or being aggressive offensively.

I do really like his defensive development though, he has realized that he doesn't need to wait for players to make their moves, he can simply just push them aside and take the puck away.

However, I think that Girardi is the more polished defender right now, so I'd take him for the now. I think that EJ will be better in the future however.

Even just simply points wouldn't do it justice. For Johnson to be better than Girardi he would have to have substantially more points. Johnson was given a very offensive role (lots of PP time and middling/sheltered minutes at evens), Girardi was used as a shutdown defenseman (low PP minutes toughest matchups possible). When you think of their role and production it really makes it hilarious for anybody to even suggest at the current moment they are anywhere close. I feel very confident saying as of now:

Girardi>>>Johnson

Johnson is literally the most over hyped 2nd pairing defenseman in the league. Don't get me wrong he's young and has tremendous potential but he certainly hasn't made good on it as of yet.
