Pick one defenceman listed for your new franchise as a GM.

Who did you select? why?

5 of these guys have the potential to be franchise defenseman. Two of them already are.

It's between Subban and McDonagh.

McDonagh or Subban. Tough choice. Big fan of Fowler as well. Very underrated around here.

Shultz has been unreal so far, keeping up with Eberle in the AHL as a dman, that's something special for sure. It's between him and Subban - Mcdo.

Really?

I guess there re 5 generational players in the 13 draft then the way you are using the term.

for me it's Fowler/Schultz/Subban with the other 2 a notch down

Wow, Mcdonagh is extremely overrated on here.

Ok, so he was a plus 25 on a team where Michael Del Zotto was a plus 20. He had 7 goals and 25 assists. Not bad for a defenseman but not great either. Just on his own team he has a guy in Del Zotto who is a year younger and scored 10 goals and 31 assists in five less games. That's 9 more points in five less games. That just goes to show you how stacked the Rangers were.

I'd take a guy like Subban over him. He scored more points in less games on a worse team at the same age.

I'd take a guy like Schultz over him. He has lit up the AHL for 16 goals and 40 pts in only 28 games played.

Mcdonagh certainly has the advantage on Fowler who IMO has been a defensive liability every time I've seen him play. Faulk, as a rookie last season, showed signs that he could play great defensive hockey and contributed more goals than Mcdonagh. Although the poor Carolina defense wrecked his plus-minus.

For me it is:
Schultz
Subban
Mcdonagh/Faulk
Fowler

Subban

I don't know how you can go against Subban or McDonagh frankly. The upside of the other guys is nice but Subban and McDonagh are already great defensemen in the NHL.

McDonagh, IMO, has the lowest offensive upside (by quite a big margin actually) out of the group.

But he was, and will be, the best defensive dman out of the group. He's on a different stratosphere compared to everyone else defensively.

For me it's:

Subban
McDonagh

Faulk

Fowler/Schultz

Nobody is picking McDonagh for his offense though. The fact that he's already so great defensively is why we're picking him.

You're making Oiler fans look bad AGAIN. I can see why opposing fans are getting annoyed with all the Schultz hype.

I wouldn't take any of them over Subban. At this point. But I think it's fair for anybody else to do so. It's all a matter of personal preference and favouritism, it's close enough there's no other real basis to choose. Subban was so good both ways for the Habs last year and provides such a great personality and entertainment value, I'm happiest keeping him around.

Mcdonagh is a beast defensively. He has tremendous mobility, skating ability and positioning. He's the type of player you want in every situation. He can shut-down the top line, contribute offensively and unlike most defensive defenceman he doesn't stagnate the breakout but actually is big contributing part on counters.

Schultz is obviously looking great but we don't need a bunch of polls comparing him to good, established NHL players fishing for compliments. One was plenty enough.
