Yes. The fact that I'm angry that we let him go. He seemed to do a great job with our kids.
I've always liked Ulfie.

The Rangers didn't let him go.Phoenix offered him an assistant coaching position and he took it.The Rangers didn't need another assistant coach.Ken Gernander will probably be the Pack next head coach.Jim Schoenfeld indicated he was going to step down as coach and turn the reigns over to either Gernander or Schoenfeld
Besides Phoenix allowed the Rangers to hire Benoit Allaire even though he still was under contract with Phoenix. One hand washes the other
Earlier this season, Samuelsson's bad luck appeared in Madison Square Garden, when his check caused a pane of protective glass to fall on Janet Jones, the wife of his teammate Wayne Gretzky. This knocked her unconscious briefly, and she was taken to a Manhattan hospital and released the next morning
those b@$+@rd$! of course we let him go though. we weren't offering him such a nice position and it'd be pretty classless to hold him down and say "you can't go and get a better job!" if he was still under contract... does that mean draft picks? phoneix = mini-EDM in terms of back scratching teams.
Exactly. It's got to be bad for the kids down there. I don't like it one bit.
It's not really that uncommon at the minor league level. Considering the average shelf life of an NHL coach is only about what 3 or 4 years, you can imagine what it is for a minor league coach.
Afterall their goal (much like their players) is to work their way up to the NHL.
Besides most of the kids aren't around for years and years and years. Pretty much after two AHL seasons, maybe 3 you're either going to make it or you're not.
The key isn't the coach, but rather the system and sticking with an organizational approach. Works just fine for the Devils.

How could it be bad for the kids down there? The kids aren't down there right now and what were the Rangers supposed to do hold Ulfie back? There isn't room on the Rangers staff and even if there was Ulfie would be a long shot to be that guy.
A assistant job in the NHL is better than a head job in the AHL. Good for Ulfie and good for the Rangers. If teams are going to raid our minor league assistants than the Rangers are doing something right in Hartford...
He'll do a good job as an assistant with the coyotes, but NY needs to solidify their system and get a coach that will stay.
Keeping AHL coaches is a delicate process. On one hand, if you sign promising up-and-comers, you are very likely to have the staff cherry picked often. In contrast, if you pick AHL coaching veterans, you have longer tenures, but questionable development.
When it's all said and done, you want coaches in the AHL who develop and teach players. This doesn't always mean putting up the best record. Task masters like McGill have questionable longterm results.
Although he already helps out prospects a bunch, I'd love to see Graves move from the PR position and take up the old Nick Foitu slot in Hartford.
While I like Gernander a lot, I would like a more scheme oriented headcoach.
Hell, w/ the Hartford connection, I'd love to see an offer made to Ron Francis. While he has promises from Carolina, if Lavy resigns this year, that would close his window for the Canes for a few years. Offer Ronny the head coach position, let Gernander learn some more, and pickup some technical assistant. Done and done.
Jim Schoenfeld will meet with Glen Sather and Don Maloney this week about Schoenfeld's plans for next season
Quote:
"Ulf and Ken did a tremendous job, and this leaves a void and changes the dynamics of things," Schoenfeld said. "We have to find a successor, but I'm not certain what's going to happen. ... I'm not leaning one way or the other. If the Rangers want me to remain coach and GM, fine. If they want me to just be the GM, that's fine, too. We're going to do whatever they think is best for player development"

I watched Ulfie work with the players several times in practice this season and I was very impressed. He deserves a shot at coaching in the NHL, and I believe this is an excellent move for him.
