pierre lebrun nice article on espn

he list the CBA in 7 categories and then keys in on the final the final 3 items left to be agree on and then the cba will get done fast.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/i...ith-disclaimer

pierre

The big three are CBA term, player contract limits and transition rules. If and when they can ever find middle ground on those three, the deal will get done in a hurry.

Speaking of a hurry, the clock is ticking toward Jan. 2.

Once and for all, time to get a deal done, boys.

It's insane. and F them. Bettman thinks he's so savvy pretending like he's grown the league in the states but doesn't acknowledge the upward trend the sport was taking in the late 80's early 90's because of gretzky, the style of play and progression of the players as athletes . He's been insanely detrimental to the growth of the league in his adamant actions to force teams into locations where they don't fit and then burden the rest of the league with their financial problems while blaming the players. He is the sole reason the NHL couldn't take advantage of the tremendous growth in popularity here over the last 25 years by turning it into more lucrative and stable television contracts. 4*lockouts in 20 years will do that. He and so many others are so oblivious to what a disaster he is. The players should sue him individually.

An NHL player says the NHL made a new offer to the NHLPA on Thursday, one which moved on contract term limits, buyouts and variance..

Among the changes in the new proposal, the NHL adjusted its max contract length from 5 to 6 yrs. Boosted the variance from 5% to 10%.

Also the Make Whole $$$$ stays at $300 million

2m Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun
New offer sees each team afforded one compliance buyout prior to 2013-14 season. Doesn't count vs. cap but it does vs. players' share

About time.

It's a shame there was so much posturing during this process, if they just negotiated they could have had a deal like this done.

Also do we buy out Bryz or Pronger??????
I am leaning Bryz still.

Buying out Bryz is beyond idiotic.

Who would be our goalie?

Leighton?

Yeah, no.

Pronger would be on LTIR

I'd probably go Meszaros

Key is prior to 2013-14. That would be next season. If Bryz sucks it up again then you can look elsewhere for next year. No idea what the FA crop looks like next year though. They won't be required to use it right after this lockout ends.

Well in all honesty, the Flyers could buyout Bryz and maybe pick up a Luongo on the cheap if he got bought out by Vancouver. We really don't know how the dominoes would fall.

IMO, though, Pronger seems like the obvious choice. While he would go onto LTIR, he still affects the cap.

Did not see the 2013-14 part, but a 48 game season isnt really enough to know how he is going to play.

2013 Goalie UFAs

Most of them will be re-signed with their team. So unless we trade for a top goalie prospect as soon as the lockout is over and hoping he turns out better than Bryz, you're basically gambling with terrible odds

If they can acquire a goalie then Bryz makes sense, if not I would think Briere is a candidate based off how he plays.

There'd be tons of other teams trying to sign Luongo if he was bought out. He's still a capable goalie. So, he wouldn't be cheap

Backstrom from Minny might be available at the end of the year. I would take him 10 out of 10 times over Bryz.

You want to amnesty a key part of our d group going forward, which makes no sense.

Also Mez will be able to suit up when(if) the NHL returns this season. Homer said that already in December.

Lol Lundqvist is a FA after 2013-14. Also Kipper. Miller.

Those were my thoughts as well. If STL's goalies both have good years again they could be in the market to sell high on one (since they are both UFAs at the end of '13-14 as well. If nothing else maybe they are stopgaps until we can offer Miller an insane contract the season after, haha.

As of now the only contracts that make sense to buy out are Briere (2 more seasons of 6.5M after this year) and Bryz (6 more years at 5.66M after this year). Pronger's LTIR isn't hurting much, so unless Bryz and Briere both play great this year then it wouldn't be pertinent to waste the buyout, imo.

If bryz bites the big one for 48 more games, I think that's more than enough to justify chucking him to the curb.

When you are dealing with a contract of that suckitude, the argument regarding who else is going to play goal doesn't carry enough weight.

Teams that need a goalie :
Toronto
Tampa Bay
Calgary
Edmonton
Devils
Columbus
Islanders
Sharks

Borderline teams :
Chicago
Canes
Sabres (If miller isn't re-signed)
Coyotes
Penguins

with that many teams looking for a good goalie, prices are going to go up.

I would have liked if we gave Huet the backup spotbefore he signed a 4 year deal in Switzerland

He's good at scoring goals in the playoffs.

He's even better at letting the other team do the same.

I agree, but I still don't think he's worth 6.5M.

I would hang onto a buy-out until it is needed (if this is how it will work at all.)

1. Mez can be traded. I dislike his contract for what he brings, but he doesn't have a NMC.
2. 2014-2015 money may be needed (3 pedigree RFAs and Reader is UFA).
3. Bryz may rebound this season.
4. The way Pronger effects the cap isn't the worst way. It limits, but it isn't strangulating.
5. Bryz may not rebound and absolutely have to be replaced (the right year for this would have to be found).

Report: NHL makes new offer to players

Oops..saw it was posted earlier above..

Anyway..buyout Prongs....

Quote:
Citing a an anonymous player as a source, Pierre LeBrun reports that the new offer "moved on the term limit for player contracts, salary variance and buyouts, according to the player."

More from LeBrun:

The league's insistence on a five-year limit has been a major sticking point with players, who countered Dec. 6 with a willingness to limit deals to eight years.

Details of the new offer include:

• Term limit on player contracts moves to six years from the five years NHL asked in previous offers (seven years if you're re-signing your own player).

• Year-to-year salary variance moves from 5 percent (NHL's previous offers) to 10 percent.

Each team will be allowed one compliance buyout before the 2013-14 season that will not count against the salary cap but will count against the players' share.

• The Make Whole provision stays at $300 million.
