Rumor: WPG/CJB swap for partial season before full realignment
I swear I saw in one of the forums that the league had already come back saying this was not true. I can't find it to save my life, maybe it was a Tweet without a link and was deleted.
On a lighter/humorous note, I saw this at the top of the page when I conducted my search:

Yes, and apparently there was a verbal "promise" to Detroit to go east, if ever there was a realignment.
But, Columbus is further east than Detroit. (As is Nashville, for that matter.)
And Tampa is further west.
I thought Columbus was right on the line too, if you take Joe Louis arena location.
Mouser sent me a PM to remind me that I should want the Wings in the west now, being they'd be in my current time zone. All I need is a team in Seattle, and I could see them in Van City and Seattle (assuming I forgive Bettman et al. and come back).
And that's why it's the Eastern and Western Conferences, and not simply the East and West conferences. The teams closer to the coast are more eastern to me, because of the way the country shrinks along the coast the further south you go.

Allegedly, you mean. Plus, Bettman could promise anything he wants, the Wings ownership should've been smart enough to know that the board members were the ones that would make the decision, and as a lot of Western teams like having Detroit as a reliable visiting draw and a lot of Eastern teams would probably prefer to keep another powerhouse out of their conference, no surprise that both sides would prefer Columbus get switched.
Not to mention that playing in the east would be majorly advantageous to the team's bottom line and help them float, whereas Detroit could be in the KHL and be just fine.
Not gonna lie, I would actually like to see this happen.

I think Columbus's chances of winning against the South East are better than their chances of winning against Detroit, Chicago, Nashville, and St. Louis.
Edit: Also, I heard that if/when realignment talks come up again, there will be no consideration of previous (verbal) agreements and it will be a completely clean slate. Basically they will assess what is best for the league and let each of the 30 individual teams weigh in. Most Western teams want Detroit to stay there because of the clout they bring and I think the East wants them to stay West as well. That's from CBJ President Mike Priest though so there might be some bias, I don't know.

I think they would hate to give up on the rivalries, but sitting behind Detroit, Chicago, Nashville, and St Louis in the Central, it may be easier to win and make the playoffs in the Southeast.

Get to the playoffs and beat a 'traditional' hockey market, boom, instant rivalry. Sabres fans still hate the canes and that was a full lockout ago.
They should do this. Will it be annoying having to travel up to Winnipeg 3 times next year? Yes... But, at least the eastern conference teams don't have to have screwy schedules... Honestly. Just swap Columbus with Minnesota and Minnesota with Winnipeg.

Looking at it strictly from a practical perspective... I don't see how this is possible.
The NHL arenas are booked, in many cases with basketball teams sharing the rink. If a season is to happen, the schedule is going to be heavily based on the remainder of the original schedule for this year. NHL schedule makers are going to have a tough enough time trying to add games in to get as many as possible, the last thing they're going to do is switch 2 teams places.
