Welcome the newest member of the Stars Franchise

The NHL Draft has come and gone once again but this year the Stars had one of their best drafts in years gaining some much needed depth. The most important of these draftees was defenseman Ryan O'Connor who last year for the Barrie Colts posted 15 points in 30 games quarterbacking an outstanding powerplay. He will be one of the few prospects invited to training camp to see if they are good enough to make the roster. The list of draftees this year are listed below:

1st Round (16th overall): Ryan O'Connor
Age: 21
Team: Barrie
League: OHL

2nd Round (46th overall): Alexsander Barkov
Age: 17
Team: Tappara
League: SM-Liiga

3rd Round (76th overall): Nick Betz
Age: 17
Team: Erie
League: OHL

4th Round (106th overall): Austin Fyten
Age: 22
Team: Lethbridge
League: WHL

5th Round (124th overall): Alex Belzile
Age: 21
Team: Rimouski
League: QMJHL

5th Round (136th overall): Benjamin Owens
Age: 19
Team: TPS
League: SM-Liiga

6th Round (166th overall): Raphael Pouliot
Age: 22
Team: Blainville-Boisbriand
League: QMJHL

During the resign week the Stars had no trouble signing their All-star players like Jamie Benn, Derek Roy, and Kari Lehtonen. But the team did have to let go of two recent fan favorites in Milan Hejduk and Radek Dvorak. "They both played amazingly last year and I tried to come to agreement with both of them but what they were asking for was way too overpriced for us so we reluctantly had to let them go," said GM Dan Murray. There was also some interesting Free Agency signings like prospect goaltender Lauren Broissoit who was released by Calgary. Murray signed Oskar Osala, Mike Santorelli, and Bud Holloway immediately out of Free Agency which some now to believe will be put together and form a good checking third line. But at this point it is all speculation as they could mix and be matched throughout the lineup. The full list of signings and releases are listed below:

Derek Roy 4 years 5.750m/year
Jamie Benn 5 years 6.000m/year

Whitney didn't retire but is being paid way too much for a 79 overall

Benn 85 to 88
Eakin 74 to 75
Glennie stayed 72
Olesiak 66 to 70 (I think?)
Murray 60 to 80 (as usual)
Faksa 56 to 60
Siemens 60 to 75
Klingberg 59 to 61
Eronen 60 to 66
Jokipakka stayed 59
Larsen 73 to 78

Man I would have liked to see Faksa to take a bit bigger of a jump for you but he's only 19 plenty time to grow. Good to see Larsen make the 5 point jump though.

Preseason, Lineups, and Captaincy
October 3, 2013

Newly captained Loui Eriksson along with the Alternates for the season Jamie Benn and Alex Goligoski

Preseason turned out well for the Stars posting a record of 3-0-1. Apparently this gives GM Dan Murray hope that our future is secure, "Seeing some of our young guns show what they got really makes me confident about how we will be in the future." We also asked him about the play of Colton Sceviour and Tomas Vincour, last years point leaders for the Stars AHL affiliate Texas Stars, "They both show great skill and scoring ability but I feel in the near future they could be making full-time spots on the NHL roster, especially in Tomas."

The lineups are similar to last years but are not completely the same. A now more aged and experienced Philip Larsen will be playing which will bolster the teams offense along with the addition of rookie defenseman Ryan Murray which will complete an elite defensive core. Though in the forward position it is much different. Compared to last year the third line has taken a sudden turn to the other end of the ice with subtractions of two offensive players, Brendan Morrow and Milan Hejduk, and the addition of three more defensive players, Bud Holloway, Oskar Osala, and Mike Santorelli will prove to help keep the pucks out of the net on a team last year that was 25th in the league in Goals Against. The goaltending situation is the same except for now, Dallas won't have to worry so much about Lehtonen getting injuried since they will have such a skilled goalie and Rookie of the Year in Richard Bachman. The lineups for the year are listed below:

Dallas Stars 2013-2014

Loui Eriksson "C" (86) - Jamie Benn "A" (88) - Micheal Ryder (81)
Ray Whitney (79) - Derek Roy (86) - Jaromir Jagr (81)
Oskar Osala (78) - Mike Santorelli (78) - Bud Holloway (79)
Cody Eakin (74) - Vernon Fiddler (75) - Eric Nystrom (74)

Alex Goligoski "A" (83) - Stephane Robidas (83)
Trevor Daley (84) - Philip Larsen (78)
Ryan Murray (80) - Kevin Klein (78)

Kari Lehtonen (85)
Richard Bachman (81)

Scratches: D Aaron Rome (75), D Jordie Benn (74), C Perttu Lingren (74)

It looks like Columbus is going to make the 2014 playoffs. With 10 games remaining, they're currently occupying the 7th seed with a 6-point lead over 9th.

Heh, in one of my Gm mode, I was 9 points ahead with 5 games left and I lost every game, so I missed the playoffs.

4 games left now with a 6 point lead on 9th, but they have 4 games in hand, so it'll be close.

I think Schwartz got to 84 with the first rosters. Don't know if that has changed in the updates.

Dallas Stars sit at 1st in the West at the start of December
December 1, 2013

Loui Eriksson and Jamie Benn congratulating each other after Eriksson's goal

These first two months for the Stars have been great as they sit atop the West with a record of 18-4-3. "I was shocked at how well we were doing," said GM Dan Murray, "It was hard to believe that only last year we were fighting for a playoff spot and now look how well we are doing." Head Coach Glen Gulutzan though was not as surprised saying, "I knew these guys were going to do well. In training camp I saw all the lines coming together as it went on. I'm excited about our defense also since we have some great and young guys this year like Philip [Larsen] and Ryan [Murray]."

Speaking of great years, this one might be for the top line of Eriksson-Benn-Ryder. Right now Ryder leads the team in points with 26 (9 goals, 16 assists), Benn comes in second with 25 (10 goals, 15 assists), and lastly comes Eriksson though being injured for three games still is tied with Benn with 25 (13 goals, 12 assists) and ranks 7th in the league in goals.

Injuries have been minor this season only severely shortening the season of one player, Ryan Murray. He was injured in the first game of the season and was out for 5 weeks and then once again he came back for a good stint then was injured for another 2 weeks. Other than him though injuries have been minor which Dan Murray says makes him, "happy and confident about the team."

Our next post will be at the Trade Deadline.

Toronto acquired Derek Morris and Daymond Langkow from PHX for Blacker, draft pick and whatnot just to send down John-Michael Liles and Steckel. They've really got Burke spot on in this game.

Now TOR traded Langkow away... with Heatley and a third. To recieve Justin Shugg and some Hofmann. And so CAR waived Tlusty. This is messed up.

Rangers waive Del Zotto. To turn waivers off or to keep it on for the comedic value...
Edit: Now also Joe Thornton and Brad Stuart sent down.
Edit: And there goes Skinner.

Alright so Minnesota waived Granlund which made me so mad that I had to snatch him up so I did

Next I'm thinking of trading for James Neal who is for some reason on Tampa Bay and they want my prospects so should I make this deal or not:

Receive

Teemu Eronen (66 overall, 3.5 stars)
John Klingberg(61 overall, 3.5 stars)
Carolina 2014 2nd Round Pick

Receive

James Neal (84 overall, 4 stars)
