So basically Columbus downgrades to a tweener with a year left on his contract for two pieces with next to no value whatsoever?
No way I give up Kassian and our 1st for less than 50 games of Perry. (he's not re-signing here, Canucks cant afford him)
And if we're giving a goalie to Chicago, I'd want one of Kane, Sharp, or Hossa in return. We're fixing a rival's biggest weakness, so why should we only get a 3rd line center?

There's no reason why we couldn't re-sign Perry, and it's likely we could talk to pre-arrange an extention beforehand.

I've spent a lot of time looking at our cap situation in 2013/14, and I recommend you do the same.
Realistically, we could only re-sign Perry if we let Edler walk, which would be a huge mistake. We don't NEED a player like Perry (we only need a good 2nd line winger), however we need Edler (a top pairing d-man).
Keeping Perry and letting Edler walk leaves a giant hole on defense.
Kassian will be very valuable to the Canucks in 2013/14, as he could step up to be a top 6 winger, and his cap hit will be under $1 mil.
Bolland hates the Sedins/Canucks. A starting goalie is a much bigger role than a 3rd line center. Saying a very good starting goalie is the same value-wise as a very good 3rd line center is laughable.

I'd be a little disappointed with those returns, but then again, it's a balance with the people asking for Kovalchuk for Luongo from the Devils, or even Kessel for Lu+. More futures oriented then I'd want, thats what I think my hang up is about those trades.

Based on my limited ability to determine what would solve our third line problems, Nielsen has always been my #1 solution and an Isles fan starting a thread about getting a great Dman for Nielsen+other good assets got me thinking about it again. I would even consider adding Raymond to the trade with an Isles prospect that is a year or two away, but adding both Ballard and Raymond in the initial offer would've made it too tempting for bashers. Me hoping to get Joensuu, would've, too. I'm dying to get another Finn on board!
Valuewise, though, I consider Nielsen-for-Ballard a good fit, it's just that Nielsen is so well liked by the Isle fans they aren't keen on seeing him go.. but in the end The Isles do need one reliable, veteran defenseman, and we need a third-line center so we can finally stop talking about Schroeder and just let him take his time.
I'd also consider getting two prospects for Luongo that are 1+ years away a good deal for us. Kassian is pushed towards graduation next year and Jensen is another potential one for that purpose, so Top 6 spots are tight for prospects that aren't surefire (and those we ain't getting, see: trade value discussion with Florida fans) .. but Shore and Petrovic ain't sloutches themselves. The defense is also pretty much set, and the bottom pairing lacks a veteran presence that should be available from the UFA market, without a need to trade assets.

Montreal fans seem to approve of Gaunce+1st for Plekanec. It's against my last post to drop that much in the way of futures, but...it's Tomas freakin' Plekanec without subtracting from our roster. They asked for Raymond, for a small + on their part (or Kaberle), so we move him and Alberts...bam, we have room for him.

I wouldn't call Joslin any worse, or better, then Alberts, but he's cheaper. However, I was basing that set of trades on $65 million cap, but I forgot about Nielsen's raise. So we can scratch that, keep Ballard, and keep our defensive pairings as is, and replaces the more expensive Alberts for Joslin, or just keep AA.
But ok, revamping it a little bit, partially for you Nuckles37, and partially because I am now not at work and bored again, a two move proposal:
Gaunce, Raymond and our 1st for Plekanec. Montreal wants to move him, and futures are what they'd want from us. Adding Raymond is a plus for them, and kind of a "meh" from me.
Luongo for Lupul and Colborne (if they wouldn't accept Kadri with Lupul). Let's just settle it for the sake of this proposal. Of course, I'd "settle" for JVR instead of Lupul.
Colborne and Kassian can continue to develop in the AHL if the NHL comes back this season, and with Schroeder and Joslin, Connauton and Sauve, we have a little NHL experience in our call ups, and a few other prospects ready to play if they are to be called upon.
Change my lines as you see fit, but I think that is a dirty top nine. Higgins and Hansen are the only things close to "tweeners" in that top nine, and I think both have shown big steps to becoming top 6 players. Plekanec and Lupul give us a little more versatility and scoring depth, and really bolster our second PP unit.

With guys like Plekanec, it's not so much what you can get but what you can sustain. Plekanic would be gone sooner than later, due to cap restrictions. Or, he would force someone else out.
Before even getting into trades, I just hope that most of this team is retained heading into the 2013-2014 season. That's the number one goal IMO. Trading Luongo for futures helps facilitate that. Trading Ballard for similar also helps. But bringing in 4m+ salaries does not... not without subtracting elsewhere.

This while retaining Edler... If that can be done while _also_ bringing in Plekanec, great. If not, then I'm not sure why you make the deal...

As much as i love higgins and hansen, thats a very poor 2nd line. If youre going to play anybody on the 2nd line , its the players with higher upside and you hope they play to their potential (booth, etc) - cuz thats what needs to happen to win the cup

My thoughts exactly, and yes, Schroeder would likely get blocked. I like Pleks. I just don't think we can keep him even if he were dealt here.

The potential guys would be Booth and Kassian. The middle 6 is up or debate really, as to who fits with who and which line should get more ice. The optimal scenario is to have both lines produce at a 2nd line rate. Similar to what BOS had/has with Peverly and Kelly on their 3rd line. We know Higgins, Kesler, Hansen and Booth can do it. The question remains can Schroeder and Kassian follow suit? If they can, look out.
