With the new CBA offer being a big step forward imo, one of the points in it is the buyout option of 1 player in order to help go from a 70mil to a 60 mil cap. I have a feeling this option will stay even if they disagree on some others.
That being said, would the Oilers use this opportunity to buy out Horcoff? There really isnt anyone else making over their pay grade, except maybe Hemsky but I have faith he'll put it back together.
If the cap does go to $60M for next year I think they will give serious thought to buying out Horcoff. I don't think that they would be in any hurry to do so, but I think the cap flexibility could have significant value.
I would also say that Hemsky would be on the trade block since he would be in year two of his deal and could be of value to a cup contender. His salary doesn't fit unless we dump Whitney, which would be fine with me.

This article ignores the fact that the Oilers have a lot of contract bonuses on their books. They won't be in much cap trouble. I also doubt that anyone would give Whitney $4M with a $60M cap unless he shows this year that he is back to where he was in his first year as an Oiler. He might be lucky to get $3M.

Whitney could be re-signed for less money next season for sure. He knows he's no longer a top 2 defenseman, so he cant ask for as much.
The other option we have for the 3rd line center role I was thinking about is Smyth. He's actually one of our better faceoff guys, and we can always have him flip back to wing after the draw
This buyout idea is part of a proposal by the nhl, i don't think the nhlpa will like the idea of $60 million cap next year so they will likely fight that there is a fair chance the cap ends up a bit higher and this "free" buyout is nonexistent. So i want to stress that this is not by any means a for sure thing or even a very likely thing at this point
However if it does happen then imo we should buyout horcoff, no brainer for me, i'm not so sure the oilers will though because our management kinda sucks

Pretty sure the player's union wanted the buyouts in the first place and the league is giving in to it.
It's gotta be Horcoff. He's at best an average 3rd line C and he's making 1st line money. He's our only albatross and a chance to rid ourselves of it should be taken.
