The games being played in Buffalo so Im assuming the play x play man must be Ted Darling who called the Sabres games from 1970-1992 (member of the HHOF), and prior to 1970 worked in Montreal for awhile doing same for the Habs.... interesting see Brian "Spinner" Spencer out there in the opening segments. Tragic figure.

It's definitely a Penguins PBP guy - he refers to Pittsburgh as 'we' and 'our' on several occasions, and calls a couple Penguin players by their first names.

Funny to see the entire Buffalo bench empty to celebrate a regulation goal ... looks like an OT winner with the entire roster out there.

Also interesting to see Pete Mahovlich in one of his first games as a Penguin after the trade from Montreal.

Prior to the '77-'78 season the Penguins TV coverage was on WIIC, now WPXI. Mike Lange didn't join WPGH and start doing TV broadcasts until 1979 (he was the radio play-by-play man beginning in 1975, and did both radio and TV from 1979 to 1993).

Then perhaps its Mike Lange, who rejoined Pittsburgh in 76 & stuck
with the club for years thereafter as their lead/central broadcast guy.

Thanks. I looked him up and he hails from California. But that voice, I'm not sure what region to attach it to. Southern US almost?

Bob Prince was the voice of the Pirates for decades and one of the most popular men in the Pittsburgh area. Long known as a homer, hence the possessive pronouns. The Pirates fired him in an unpopular move and he bounced around briefly, including hockey. He wasn't a success as he didn't know the game very well.

That's definitely Bob Prince. I thought maybe it might have been Jim Forney, but it's too early in the season. For comparison sake, here's Prince in a local commercial.

Yeah, he was tremendous at baseball, a deserved winner of the Ford Frick Award for broadcasting excellence.

He would have probably become a solid-to-very good hockey broadcaster had he come to the game a bit younger, but he was in his 50s when the Pens were born, and over 60 when he started broadcasting for them.

Anytime I get to see video of the Pens in their blue colors, I'm a happy camper. Interesting to see Spencer on a line with gunners Mahovlich and Pronovost. Damn, the lowly Pens were holding a 3-1 lead in Buffalo against the mighty Sabres in the final minutes and couldn't hold it. Bet Herron remembers that game to this day.
