Separating players ready for the NHL from the others that are just starting their pro careers or are in minor leagues makes sense. (I don't understand Fraser though)

The thing is you can speculate all you want but you never actually know when a guy is NHL ready. Most people expected Dillon to make the roster but he really struggled early for Texas and isn't exactly playing head and shoulders above many guys now either.

True, I see your point. But isn't it all speculation anyways? I mean that's all these rankings are. Speculation.

Sure it is. I just think the point of a prospect ranking is to try to come up with an order of which players will make the most impact and not including players who havent made any impact seems silly.

There are many talented players that don't truly shine until they reach the NHL. It's a much different game than the AHL. The ability to play and think the game at a pace that greatly exceeds any level they have previously played at is very hard to judge at a lower level. Of course all rankings are open to much speculation.

Just stat watching, I see Austin Smith has 16 goals in 20 ECHL games... howcome he's in the ECHL instead of the AHL? No room for him in Texas or?

He was called up and played last night's game. He was previously sent down because he had a rough start to the season and our coach never found confidence in him.

It's debatable whether he had a rough start. He played in 1 game, a game I thought he played pretty well in, and got no further chances. Everything else is based on one person's impressions of training camp.

He's ironed out some of the jitters that were in his game at the start of the season and is playing much calmer and with confidence. He might be Texas' most dependable defenseman at the moment. He hasn't had the breakout that Oleksiak has had though.

In that recent feature on him, he even admitted he didn't feel right at the start of the season.

There were games Saturday but I forgot to post the results, the days are bleeding together. Stransky had a goal and was the 3rd star.

Pensfan coming in peace,

I am in a SIM hockey league which bases ratings off of players real time stats. We also do a real draft and run a farm team etc.

Reason why I am here is I own both the rights to Matt Fraser and Troy Vance. I was curious without any real bias what you guys feel I have here? Are either one of them going to be a legit NHL player. Fraser seems to have the goal scoring capabilites and has shored up his defensive issues from last season. I havent heard anything on Vance and I am kind of concerned about that.

Was curious your thoughts

Fraser should get a shot at the NHL, no idea whether he'll actually turn out or not.

Vance is looking good but is still a long shot to ever be more than a #6/7, if that.

Long term, Vance's potential would probably be similar to Hal Gill. I would never really expect him to score a ton, but all reports out of the Q seem to indicate he's been developing his shutdown game in that league.

Ya I really liked Vance in the beginning but it seems I havent heard much but if he is a shutdown type guy, he may just be in the background getting it done which seems encouraging

Fraser will be a 2nd line production guy, no doubt about it. Guy has a nose for the net, and is always in the right spot to put the puck in the net.

Vance is a tough one. The Gill comparison seems pretty spot on.

I hope you guys aren't saying he'll have a career like Gill's.

Dallas would be fortunate if Vance had a career like Gill's. In all likelihood Vance won't even have a tenth of the career Gill had (1,000 NHL games + 100 playoff games).

Gill is respected around the league for his defensive play ... especially on the PK. He's a guy that could still earn a Top 6 role on most teams even at 37 years old.

Every draft pick can't be a first line forward or #2 D. Gill has been a respected Top 4 D the majority of his career, and even now at 37 he's effective on the PK and in a Top 6 role.

I'm aware. What I'm saying is that we'd be ridiculously lucky to have Vance end up with that kind of career. I don't see him ever turning into more than a #5 at absolute best, probably more of a fringe defender in a defensive #6/7 role with limited PK time.

I'm not sure if you knew that's what I was referring to. I'd have to be insane to think he'll ever be a #2. There are only 3 guys currently on this team that I think will ever have a chance to be a legit top line defender: Goligoski (already is IMO), Larsen, and Oleksiak.
