i voted Rangers because i feel by the time this season actually starts(if it does),Sauer will be back or close enough to being back.this extra time off is doing nothing but helping him get better.

then with him and Stralman on the 3rd pairing,if thats how they end up,thats a pretty damn good 3rd pairing.

Best top D pairing: Chara-Seidenberg now that Suter is on Minn.

Best depth: NYR

If Dougie Hamilton turns into something special I would go with Boston otherwise I have to consider LA, St louis as well.

It's too tough for me to decide, I'll just say those 4 are the top for me.

Not that it's relevant for the first 20 or so polls but I think COL would have Hunwick at #6 until the season starts at least.

NYR and Phoenix should be the only teams in discussion for #1. Went with NYR, mainly because of their depth and balance - not to mention quality.

I agree with this. The personnel is great, but how they come together as a unit is something else. Their commitment to clogging shooting and passing lanes and collapsing around the front of the net is second to none. I still think Lundqvist gets overrated because of them.

I'd put Boston next. The depth isn't really there past Chara and Seidenberg (it's OK but nothing great), but they really play very well defensively as a unit as well, and they always get solid scoring from the point.

St. Louis 3rd.

What's this depth on the Rangers that people speak of? They have a good top 4, but it falls off hard on the third pairing.

Stralman's pretty good for 13-18 minutes on a given night playing PP and ES minutes. Pretty much the perfect bottom pair defenseman. The Rangers play him on the 2nd pairing with Staal however and let Del Zotto play with Bickel on the bottom pairing to balance the depth.

I voted for the Oilers as a joke because New York will and should win the poll.

I'm not saying they are the best by any means but Columbus will have a stellar D when they come back. The only questions I still have is will tyutin and nikitin do what they did last year? And can jack Johnson continue where he left off? Because if he does he will have a breakout season. Also unless the NHL starts in a few weeks will have Murray on their starting roster. And Erixon will almost certainly be seeing a bit of time as well.

I can't see how that matters that much, honestly. They can just play their top 5 more then.

Not sure I'd go with Columbus at the moment, but their future D does look promising.

OP is missing Tallinder and Harrold for NJD. We may not have the best studs but we do have a ton of depth on Defense. Ill take my 'no name defense' any day.

I'm trying to limit it to just the top 6. I wasn't sure who to leave out for NJ, so I chose Tallinder. If it should be someone else, please state it here and I will correct it for the next poll. Thanks.

Maybe for the next threads Tallinder should be top 6 in front of Fayne or Larsson. He is a great dman for us. Although it doesnt matter because we wont be high in the voting anyways.

Okay for the next poll, maybe I'll make it Salvador, Zidlicky, Greene, Tallinder, Larsson, Volchenkov.

Bingo. Although Fayne is great on D as well, we have a lot of solid guys. But that looks better.

Tallinder is a great influence on Fayne and especially Larsson. He is really important for the Devils but not a lot of people notice it.

The Rangers' blueline is sick. After that, it's a toss up between LA, Van, St. Louis, and Boston.

Bickel sucks, but Stralman is a good #5. No reason to include him as a reason why the Rangers shouldn't be #1. Not a top 4 guy on an elite D, but as a #5 not bad all.
