Just a quick note from a team exec. Hearing that players were impressed with Bettman's demeanour tonight. Might be a chance.

It doesn't matter what the players feel. Heck, they were somewhat "impressed" when they met with the owners. But then Fehr stepped into the room....just like he will again this time. And all things go to h-e-double hockey sticks.

Fehr is determined to continue this lockout. I bet he could convince the players that the gold brick sitting on the table in front of them is actually worthless if he wanted to.

he does that by telling them in five years they could have two gold bricks if they just hold out a little longer. He leaves out the part about most of them not being around in five years and most of them are too self important to think they'll be out of the league by then.

Heatley will get this fixed. He's a f***ing All-Star after all. No-one says no to a f***ing All-Star.

Some tweets are saying NHL made a counter to NHLPA'S counter. NHLPA is reviewing it. Will meet tomorrow. They met for 40 minutes today

A counter offer to a counter offer?

Is this the first time that's happened in this lockout?

If so that's a good sign. Not a "get ready for hockey" good sign, but at least its positive headway.

I want the lockout to end, so the businesses in this town can start making money along with the Wild employees. But another part of me cringes at a hockey season starting so #$@!ing late. If they can't get it done this week, then call it OFF already!

I think we are very much in do-or-die territory. Especially considering the Midnight tonight deadline for the NHLPA to file their disclaimer of interest.

I think we know one way or another if there is going to be a season this year sometime within the next day or so.

If the union files the disclaimer, 95% chance we're not seeing the NHL this year. If they don't file, it probably means a deal is eminent.

I wake up every morning around 23.00 est and run to hfb/twitter if a deal has been reached or not. My birthday is January 12th, so maybe the training camps could open then with puckdrop @ 19th? Would be the perfect present.

I still think we might end up having to wait another week or so to see if any deal happens...if the deadline passes without the PA choosing to decertify, then they can actually vote again tomorrow or the next day to allow their leadership to be able to do so again. I forget the actual date but it's around the 9th which is the actual deadline in order to have training camp on the 11th or 12th and a season starting on the 18th or 19th.

Just because the "deadline" passes, doesn't mean the ability to disclaim goes away. The Sports Law guy from TSN has a few tweets outlining the issues surrounding that.

Mine is the 30th...a little later than yours but still a damn good present if we have a season.

From what I could gather, if they don't get a deal by the 14th, they plan on ending the whole season. Accurate or no?

Garry has said he can't envision a season shorter then 48 games. so yeah it would be going by those statements.

There is something to this for sure...I saw that on his twitter too. It doesn't mean a deal is eminent tonight, but it signals that at least Seto and some others think there will be a deal sometime soon.

Anyone know how the "rumored" 20% variance on contracts exactly work? Like use the Suter/Parise contracts as an example to show the effect. I think I haven't had the amount of sleep to really attempt it.

Without a contract term limit?

A completely unstructured, front loaded, 14 year contract... (Shea Weber) with a 20% downward variance each year:
2012 14,000,000.00
2013 11,200,000.00
2014 8,960,000.00
2015 7,168,000.00
2016 5,734,400.00
2017 4,587,520.00
2018 3,670,016.00
2019 2,936,012.80
2020 2,348,810.24
2021 1,879,048.19
2022 1,503,238.55
2023 1,202,590.84
2024 962,072.67
2025 769,658.14

Cap Hit 4,780,097.67

Of course, to get the player his money, the first four years could be at a 0% variance, with a 20% downward after that... it doesn't imply that a 20% downward is necessary, just the max it can vary.

Somewhere around 4-6 weeks ago is when I realized nothing would happen until the deadline (mid Jan) and it looks like we're still headed there. Still not concerned. Still 99% sure we have a season. Still think we might have one more little blowup but talks will resume within 2-3 days if that happens.

Also still not convinced losing half the season could have been avoided, given:

1. Many of the teams are losing money and many more are just barely making money. They had nothing to gain by giving in early.

2. The players went all-in on Fehr and probably knew up front they would lose half a season to get as much as possible back in the transition and contracts.

Anyways, per Russo, some rumors about the latest talks:

- TWO potential buyouts for summer 2013 that don't count against the cap but count against HRR. Seems pretty excessive to me, I'd rather see them just have one buyout and set the cap between $63-65m.

- 20% year-to-year variance. So with contracts capped at ~7 years it's not a big deal, but this is kind of a big win for the players. Honestly it's a little more variance than I'd like to see. But I'm a 5-year contract max kind of guy (it's just so more interesting).

- Pension funding (i.e. another part of "make whole" payments) not resolved yet, basically some wiggle room for the players/NHL to haggle about make whole.

- CBA length not resolved yet.

- Players still want a cap on escrow at 10%, thought I heard there might be movement from the NHL but wouldn't be surprised if they stand firm.

I just find it humorous that the players as a collective allowed a small group of people lose them a half a season of paychecks that they will never get back for, wait for it; absolutely nothing in return. Blows my mind really.

These players gained nothing out of this process and in the end are getting the same deal they could have negotiated a year ago. Sad.

There aren't any pro sports teams that negotiate CBA's in advance of the offseason before they expire, so there's not much precedent there.

And obviously if they took the deals offered early in the season they lose on contracts, variance, make whole, UFA/RFA years, etc.
