Corbett was involved in the scandal, that's why. He was part of the cover up.

Don't worry, we're voting him out anyways. We voted in an attorney general who intends on going after him too

Also, it isn't anti-trust, Penn State could always jump from the NCAA to the NAIA and not suffer the penalties.

Paterno family also promises an "analysis of the experts," essentially a rebuttal, to the Freeh report and actions of the board and admins.
Earlier, people in this very thread questioned the Freeh report's legitimacy and claimed it was inaccurate. These people, who are deluded and follow the Paterno cult, are very dangerous.

Imagine what would have happened if Penn State didn't negotiate their own penalty

Smart move by PA's governor. Keep the story alive in the news and make sure that the tarnished reputation of the university remains tarnished for everybody to see by keeping their dirty laundry out in the open longer than it otherwise would. Oh wait, not a smart move.

The NCAA's a private institution and, as has been said, nobody's forcing Penn State to say. They can inflict punishments as they see fit as a result, and end result of this will almost assuredly be even more dirt getting out.

And well said by ixcuincle. The cult of personality/team surrounding Paterno and the football program is the reason why this mess got to where it is in the first place, where otherwise intelligent and accomplished individuals were willing to hide an active pedophile sexually assaulting children in the hopes that they could protect the team's image. For that reason alone, the NCAA was entirely in the right to drop the hammer on them, and should've inflicted stricter punishments, to send the message that some things are more important that sports. And I still stand by the claim that this punishment falls well within the confines of the NCAA's accepted and established nebulous "lack of institutional control" clause in punishing member institutions.

So stupid
$60,000,000 is leaving the state of Pennsylvania. That's why the state is sueing. It has nothing to do with anything else but money.

Although the state is losing money, they have no case; none.

At best the state may be able to fight the penalty against them, but all the sanctions and such against the school? That's a penalty to the PROGRAM. Schools have faced harsh penalties like this for much lesser offenses.

They should be offered a deal: Instead of paying 60 million they get shorted another 60 scholarships spread out over 5 years starting in 2013.

O'Brien to NFL likely.

Anyone who enjoys watching internet meltdowns might want to head to Black Shoe Diaries right now.

It's best to leave this mess, Penn State is a good old boys club which won't let O'Brien win with integrity. Penn State is like SMU, and Corbett is Bill Clements.

I guess it's all about where his moral compass is at. I think it would be a low blow for him to leave those kids there, but also maybe what he's had to endure and seeing the skeletons made him uncomfortable. He knows how well he recruited, too.

The Penn State brethren blowing up might be fun to watch again though.

I'm sure they wouldn't mind missing 22 million from the B1G/ESPN deal.

Well, it's not actually an option, but technically it is, which would throw anti-trust out the window.

O'Brien got a huge raise and isn't going anywhere. For now.

When he leaves, the program will be hit hard, if they aren't hit hard enough already by future sanctions. I didn't like the hire at first and openly mocked his poor start but he turned it around

Bill O'Brien jumping ship to the NFL after one year would be the most unforgivable act ever committed by a Penn State football coach

Quote:
Former FBI director Louis Freeh is standing by his conclusion that former Penn State coach Joe Paterno and three top administrators concealed child sex abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky.

Freeh responded Sunday to a new critique released by Paterno's family that called Freeh's report last July inaccurate and unfounded, resulting in a "rush to injustice."

Freeh says in a statement he respects the right of the Paterno family to conduct a media campaign in an effort "to shape the legacy of Joe Paterno" but the coach should have done more to stop Sandusky.
The notion of anyone questioning an in-depth report such as the Freeh report is ridiculous.

What is most pathetic IMO, is that even in this counter "No he didn't!" report, they still stand by this line of thought:

"Paterno reported the information to his superior(s) pursuant to his understanding of university protocol and relied upon them to investigate and report as appropriate," the family's analysis said.

Oh, I have reasonable suspicion that an employee of mine sodomizing children. Well, I filed my report! No further obligation from me, let's play football!!!

I find it unfathomable that the Paternos (and they loyal cult following) do not see how horrific nature their line of reasoning implicitly sanctions. It tells me that these people are morally bankrupt and I don't have an iota of sympathy for them.

If I learned one of my employees did that, not only would I fire them immediately, but I would cooperate in any way possible in the investigation. Instead, Paterno did the absolute bare minimum he was obligated to do and made sure Sandusky was able to coach the next Saturday. It is disgusting.

I try to be open-minded and rational, but there is no way you can defend Paterno. Then again, I'm not a Penn State alumnus nor do I live in the region.

It boggles my mind what some people say here when they try to stick up for him, when they just dismiss the Freeh report as "garbage". The cult must be really, really powerful.

Freeh summed it up perfectly: “The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children Sandusky victimized... (they) never demonstrated, through actions or words, any concern for the safety and well-being of Sandusky’s victims until after he was arrested in 2011"
