Why An 18 Team NHL Playoff Format Would ROCK

Why An 18-Team NHL Playoff Format Could Work
http://thehockeywriters.com/why-an-1...at-could-work/

Do you like the idea or do you want to keep the current 16-team format?

It's a STUPID idea. I don't know how to (or, if I even have to) elaborate any further.

The new MLB playoff format with the extra team is stupid enough, we don't need hockey copying it.

16 vs 14 is already <50%.

So the 8th/9th place teams get placed at a further disadvantage by being forced to play more games while the top seed rests?

No sir, I don't like it.

As LA proved last season, why have seedings at all? Or if the regular season collection of ho-hum hockey isn't even worth watching, then why play the season at all?

Oh right. Money.

Having more playoff rounds would help bring in more money, so i can see most of the teams, if not all, being in the playoffs down the road.

I'm really not a fan of the new MLB playoff format, so you can guess how I feel about this. The one-game playoff rounds just don't seem "right" somehow. Every team that goes in to the Stanley Cup Playoffs should have the same objective - win four best-of-seven series.

the only thing i would do to the playoff format is rank the teams by points...each divisional champs make the playoffs but arent seeded 1 2 3 but by points along with the other 5 teams.thats it though as the playoffs are near perfect the way it is.

I don't know why everyone is so up in arms over the prospect of including as many as 20 teams in the playoffs

for those math noobs out there, that would be 67% of teams in the playoffs
67% of the teams made the playoffs for the entirety of the original 6 and original 12 eras.
From the WHA merger in 1979 until 1992, more than 66% of the teams made the playoffs
for the 1992-93 season, exactly 67% of teams made the playoffs

so why on earth is it such a terrible idea to have so many teams in the playoffs now when it was okay back then?

I'm all for it, as long as it's not more than 80% making the playoffs;
-under the previous format there were two big races; the race for the playoffs and the race for home ice. Having byes would add a 3rd race.
-continuing on the last point, I get that seeding can be important but there's definitely been a sense with some teams that once they clinched the playoffs and knew whether or not they'd get home ice, they would take their foot off the gas to an extent
-also the fewer teams which miss the playoffs mean the fewer teams in situation where they may want to lose games for draft picks.
-not only would there be more important regular season games but MORE playoff games.

BRING IT ON!!!!

while giving a chance to the ninth-best team in each conference to win the Stanley Cup.
also known as the 7th worst. more than half the teams in each conference already make the playoffs now. if a team can't even get the 8th seed, they don't deserve a chance to play in the playoffs.

I prefer the 16 team format. Especially after the NHL goes to 32 teams.

Less than half the teams should me make it to the playoffs IMO.

12 team format:
1v6
2v5
3v4

Or 14 team (I like this one more):

1 gets a bye
2v7
3v6
4v5

The winner of 4v5 plays the number one team.

Just personal opinion though.

No stupid changes like adding teams to the playoffs are needed.

The NHL has the best playoff structure in NA. Leave it alone.

This. 16 is perfect. Maybe if we expanded to 32 teams it might be considered, but even then, I think I'd still prefer it as is.

Why even have a regular season?
30 teams make it into the playoffs. Imagine the intensity!

The NBA seeding system would be an improvement. The 3 division winners and the best non-division winner are seeded #1-4 in order of points. The next four best teams regardless of division are seeded #5-8 in order of points.

There is now no longer an incentive to finish with the 6th seed to draw an easy division winner. (6th seed New Jersey got to play Florida in the first round this year, which doesn't seem quite fair to the Pens and Flyers who had to play each other). However, winning your division still guarantees a top-4 seeding and home ice advantage. It's a compromise between those who say divisions should be important and those that say it's unfair to punish teams for being in a strong division.

12 teams would be the same format as the NFL, 14 teams would have to have the #1 seed playing the lowest seeded team still standing (which could still be a 6th or 7th seed, as opposed to the winner of 4 vs. 5, depending on which teams win in the first round.).
