I can't see them buying out Horcoff, and I'm not sure that they'll need to, anyway.
If the new CBA has the same bonus cushion rules, Edmonton's cap for 2013-2014 would effectively be $64.5m, not $60.0m. From CapGeek, "teams can exceed the salary cap in performance bonuses by up to 7.5 percent of the salary cap's upper limit. Should performance bonuses actually earned at season's end push them past the salary cap's upper limit, the excess bonuses earned will be carried over as a penalty to the team's cap payroll the following season." Really helps teams like Edmonton, with a number of players in bonus land.
The only reason to buy out Horcoff would be in the event that there is another player they favor that becomes available. I see them re-signing Smid (raise) and Whitney (drop) and picking up a $1.25m backup to Dubnyk.
They gonna back up horcs over payment to the bitter end. In fact i dont want to ship away a vet and a captain with so many kids in the team. We have no options, a weak Gags as 2 c and stonehand belanger as a backup; huuh! Horc have been there when we made that crazy run, we cant think that newborn petry and rookie schultz, klefbom can take so much icetime without vets like whitney to nurse them for a season or 2. We burn all our young talent if we throw them to the wolves without some experience who can keep them alive, and let them have a steady develop curve.
If the oilers have a chance to buy out Horc with no cap hit and they don't, it just shows they are not really willing to do what it takes to win. I don't even dislike Horc, I think he is a useful player who unfortunately has had major injury issues. That being said, you just have to buy him out if you have the chance. No questions asked.
ya, you have to think there are going to be a LOT of choices out there
ya, especially if there are two buy outs. There will be a lot of players suddenly on the market. I don't mind Nuge and Gags down the middle with the option of signing another 2 or 3 center.
So management will probably do something awkward like moving a pile of depth players like Belanger, Eager, Jones, Petrell, Peckham instead... and then try to plug the holes with AHL prospects. This would let them preserve Horcoff's well earned status as team "anchor" down the middle.
If we buyout Horcoff, I can't be the only one who doesn't care for him back?
I mean, he's not an amazing leader, not really all that great at any part of his game, and we have an in house replacement for 3rd line C. I don't know, I just don't see how it would be that much of a loss.

Horcoff takes all the whiffs for a team. He concentrates them on his C every time he goes out there. Next thing you know, the whole team's out of balance and we're missing all the pucks. Horcoff brings Whifcoffbalance. It's an intangible.
Seriously, I thought he was decent at faceoffs or something. It helps me sleep at night.

I wouldn't miss him. Guys like him are in abundance and cheap. It would also be a signal of a new era, especially for leadership.
They obviously expect lots of players to be squeezed out.
Redden
Savard*
Stajan
Hjalmarsson/Montador/Oduya (if they can't find a trade partner, which is unlikely)
Horcoff
Gomez
Pronger*
Havlat
Boyle
Salo
Komisarek
J.Schultz
*assuming they don't just use the LTIR excemption
Those are pretty much the only names I can see being bought out. That's not a tonne of names being made available. I highly doubt many teams (if any) buyout two players. Of course, that's also assuming the buyout thing is for the 13/14 season only.
Some players like Leino and Dipietro are possibilities, but they still have a lot of years on their deals and a buyout would be incredibly expensive for the guy signing the cheques.

Who's our replacement for him in house? CVV? Lander? If we're buying out Horcoff, we better be signing someone else, because we don't have anyone
