Top scorers by decade

Cna any one find or already have a list of the top scores of each decade in the NHL, i assume Gretzky would rule the 80s and Howe probably the 50s but after that its a little sketchy, Esposito for the 70s? It'd be great if there was a top five for each decade going back to the 20s but that seems like a ton of work.

I have no "facts" per se...but...

Gordie Howe surely lead the 50's.

I bet Bobby Hull led the 60's in scoring, although Howe might be up there as well.

Esposito is a pretty safe bet for the 70's considering he had 5 straight seasons over 125 points.

Gretzky is a no-brainer for the 80's, and I'm pretty sure he's #1 for the 90's as well.

For the 2000's...I have no idea. Jagr slumped, Forsberg spent half of it in the hospital...it's gotta be either Naslund or Thornton.

Not sure, but I think Jagr has more points than Gretzky in the 90s.

Stastny was #2 in the 80's, behind Wayne.

This isn't truly the 1960's Jan 1st 1960 to Dec 31st 1969.

But from the season's 1959/60 through 1968/69

Hull 800
Howe 782
Mikita 767
Ullman 673
Beliveau 658
Delvecchio 639
Mahovlich 605
Bathgate 575 (but only played 9 seasons)
Bucyk 566
Henri Richard 565

Might have missed some players at the bottom. I only added up the ones that were probably the highest scorers.

Without adding it up Esposito is almost certainly the leader in the 1970's.

Stupid question. How can the adjusted point total for Nels Stewart be lower than that of Marty Barry even though he had more points? There are more cases of this in this list. I chose that because I saw it first.

I wonder how the top 10 scorers would look if you did it every 5 yrs instead of every 10.

This is well done and is very interesting. When you pick a 10 year period, it is skewed to who had their prime years in that decade. For example Doug Bentley comes out as the top scorer in the 40's (nothing wrong wth that as he was a great player). Even more surprising is Al rollins as #4 goalie in the 50's despite playing with those dreadful Hawk teams of that decade. Of course there were only 6 teams & only 6 regular goalies in each season. Someone mentioned it would be interesting do do ratings for 5 year intervals. Would also be interesting to see mid-decade to mid-decade. I dare say some surprising results would show up.

Pnep can your data base do this .

It might affect some goalies but their may be less change among the scorers than one would guess. They will likely be most of the same guys just shifting around a couple of spots.

In case anyone was wondering about the playoff leaders:

1930s:

1. Marty Barry 33
1. Charlie Conacher 33
3. Frank Boucher 25
3. Doc Romnes 25
3. Busher Jackson 25
6. John Sorrell 24
7. Johnny Gagnon 23
7. Johnny Gottselig 23
7. Herbie Lewis 23
7. Joe Primeau 23

- The unfortunate thing is that half the players on that list are unfamilar names to the average fan. Most baseball fans know about guys like Cobb, Ruth, Hornsby, Wagner, Gehrig etc.; yet the majority of younger hockey fans have likely never heard of Marty Barry. Bettman and the NHL really need to look into promoting the game`s history instead of neglecting it.

1940s:

1. Toe Blake 55
2. Maurice Richard 50
3. Elmer Lach 45
4. Ted Kennedy 42
5. Carl Liscombe 41
6. Syl Apps 40
7. Milt Schmidt 38
8. Sid Abel 37
9. Mud Bruneteau 31
9. Joe Carveth 31

- Well, it`s easy to see what the best line of the 40s was; in a way Toe Blake`s accomplishments as a coach may have slightly overshadowed what a great player he was. The big surprises on the list are Carl Liscombe, who played his entire career with Detroit, Bruneteau, who is only remembered for ending the longest OT game ever, and Carveth, one of the cleanest and most respected players of his time.

1950s:

1. Bernie Geoffrion 96
2. Dickie Moore 73
3. Ted Lindsay 72
3. Maurice Richard 72
5. Jean Beliveau 71
6. Doug Harvey 62
7. Gordie Howe 61
8. Fleming Mackell 57
9. Alex Delvecchio 49
10. Bert Olmstead 48

- Obviously since Montreal dominated the playoffs in the 50s, Hab players will dominate this list. Still it`s a slight surprise that Geoffrion is in first place, and a huge surprise that his lead is so big over everyone else. It makes you wonder how much higher his career would be regarded if he didn`t play in the shadow of Richard and Beliveau. The only non-HHOFer here is Mackell, who`s playoff career PPG was over 40% higher than his regular seaon PPG, which has to be a record.

1960s:

1. Bobby Hull 83
1. Jean Beliveau 83
3. Stan Mikita 76
4. Gordie Howe 72
5. Norm Ullmam 67
5. Dick Duff 67
7. Henri Richard 62
8. Pierre Pilote 59
9. Red Kelly 55
10. Alex Delvecchio 53

- Chicago may have only won one Cup in the 60s, but it doesn`t look like you can blame Hull or Mikita as it seems that they did their job. Somewhat surprising that Howe and Ullman rate so high considering Detroit didn`t win a Cup in the decade. Another surprise amidst all these legends is Dick Duff, who my uncle swears is the most underrated player ever.

1970s:

1. Guy Lafleur 120
1. Jacques Lemaire 120
3. Phil Esposito 102
4. Jean Ratelle 93
5. Brad Park 90
6. Yvon Cournoyer 88
7. Bobby Clarke 83
8. Bobby Orr 82
9. Rick MacLeish 80
10. Johnny Bucyk 77
10. Wayne Cashman 77

- Speaking of underrated players; how about Jacques Lemaire? I figured he`d make the top 10, but didn`t think he would be tied for first. Esposito may have had some bad qualities, but he could score practically at will. I`ve already talked enough about how much I admire Ratelle. Park is the only defenceman to hit the top five in any decade. Surprisingly, MacLeish was the Flyers top playoff scorer in their two Cup years.

1980s:

1. Wayne Gretzky 274
2. Jari Kurri 177
3. Mark Messier 169
4. Mike Bossy 148
4. Glenn Anderson 148
6. Bryan Trottier 142
7. Bobby Smith 134
8. Paul Coffey 118
9. Brian Propp 112
10. Ken Linseman 111

- Welcome to the 80s: where four rounds, 16 playoff teams and high scoring games inflate the numbers. Still, all that into consideration, look at how ridiculously large the gap is between Gretzky and everyone else. Naturally the list is filled with Oilers and Islanders, but it`s nice to see the very consistent Smith and Propp here. I`ll refrain from making any Linseman jokes and just say that he was a great player.

1990s:

1. Mario Lemieux 136
2. Mark Messier 126
2. Sergei Fedorov 126
4. Jaromir Jagr 119
5. Brett Hull 113
6. Wayne Gretzky 108
7. Ron Francis 107
7. Steve Yzerman 107
9. Claude Lemieux 106
10. Larry Murphy 105

- Lemieux wins here in a close race. Messier is the only player to hit the top three in two decades, a testament to his longevity. Jaromir Jagr rates pretty high for a player who takes a lot of criticism for not producing in the playoffs.

2000s:

1. Joe Sakic 84
2. Peter Forsberg 83
2. Patrik Elias 83
4. Chris Drury 60
5. Milan Hejduk 57
6. Brett Hull 55
7. Petr Sykora 53
8. Mike Modano 52
8. Brian Rafalski 52
10. Mark Recchi 51

- This one is still anybody`s game, but the top three have definitely sert themselves apart from the rest of the pack. I won`t mention how Elias is the only LW near the top of a decade in the last 30 years. Drury is a shock at #4. This is after Game 2 of the 2006 Final, so Recchi may yet add to his total.

pnep, I have always been impressed with your work but, I do have a question. What about the different amount of ice time players have had over the decades? I mean, players in the 20s, played almost the entire 60 minutes, while today, 20 minutes is what a typical forward plays. That can really skew adjusted point totals.
