20 teams in the playoffs? How could they make that work?
NHL was pushing last year to change the divisions from six to four. That would mean five teams per division making the post-season.
While some argue that for the majority of the NHL's lifespan that 67% of the teams made the post-season, fact is it ruins the challenge and leads to far more games going to the three point OT/SO instead of completing in regulation.
They want 20 teams in the playoffs to increase revenues. I think it's a pretty bad idea. What could happen is the revenues already made by 16 teams will get diluted and they'll be back at square one with longer playoffs and less global interest. They should concentrate on making money while playing 82 games in the scrap markets. The playoffs are perfect the way they are played.

It isn't a question of math, it's a question of what catches the attention of Americans the most and the answer in their heads is the playoffs. Increasing the amount of games doesn't necessarily increase revenues or profits in this case. They want more people watching not just the same people shelling the same bucks, which would probably translate in an increase of broadcasting fees in the long run.
Edit: Think about it the teams that lose money will lose more with more games. Reducing the amount of games might actually help more. So if you make the playoffs longer that would be an almost necessity.

I'm getting excited/optimistic here. All signs are pointing to a season starting up on the 19th, and that would be great. I still wouldn't buy any tickets this year, but if someone wants to take me to a game for free, I wouldn't turn it down.
Also, if they do come to an agreement soon, waiting until the 19th will be so difficult!

All signs except the ticking clock. That's 16 days until the season theoretically starts. That's very tight. To say the least.
i know this is going too far because theres no agreement yet but if theres a deal will there be preseason games or just 7 days of camps and then regular season?

No preseason. There would be a shortened camp and then the season starts up.
Seems like a no-brainer. Who would MB use the 2nd on?
I'd vote for Kaberle. Considering Tinordi and Beaulieu in the A right now, a spot or two may open a spot for one of both of them to be the 5th and 6th defensmen.
