too soon to call anyone a steal. Laleggia and Jujhar Khaira have went beast mode since the draft

Not a homer pick at all. He's one of my "steals" too.

More than 50 percent of 2nd rounders never play a NHL game.

He might not either. The point was that in the 2nd round, you're not expecting a top pairing dman. If you get a 2nd pairing guy, it was a good pick

How has Kevin Roy been doing in the NCAA? I remember thinking Anaheim got a huge steal in the 4th round after seeing the numbers he was producing in the USHL, despite his slightly small stature.

Which then goes back to what I said, than no player is a steal yet...

I think this post answers the OP question, and sums up the thread. To early to know.

Not at all. The first thing I noticed about him was how large he looks. I looked for him because of his goal total at the time when I was going to a game. His skating didn't impress me a whole lot but he got things done. His skating is not that bad at all.

Was a little disappointed the Bruins didn't pick him but our teams can't pick every player.

He had a lot of help from injuries. Brodin, Klefbom, and Pettersson all missing the tournament secured his spot on the team, and the injury to Lindholm prevented him from being the 7th defenseman.

More historically true, pretty much every draft since 2000 has had a little over 50% of all players play in at least 1 NHL game and quite a few that haven't are non North American players.

Eyeballing it and a quick count it looks like around 55% of 2nd rounders make the show.

More than I thought would make it actually.

Kulak looks horrible because he is the best Dman on a really young and not very good giants team.

Their best forward is a 13 draft and it's just a really thin team.

Still a very good prospect for a 4th round pic, although size is an issue.

He's not their best dman though. Since Musil left, their best dman is Vannieuwenhuizen. Kulak is their 3rd or 4th best dman actually. and size isn't an issue. He's not huge by any means, but he's grown a fair bit the last year or so. He's a great skater, and has a decent shot, but he's a turnover machine and an absolute nightmare in his own end. And this isn't coming from someone that's watched him one or two times. I live in Vancouver and go to most games

Edit: don't get me wrong, he's still a decent prospect, and has a chance to be essentially J-Bo lite, but he's no steal just yet by any means

I think calling him a nightmare in his own end is an extreme exaggeration. He was specifically touted last year as being a relatively strong defensive player that came with untapped offensive potential. I have been trying to keep tabs on him this year, and there is no doubt he is struggling a bit, but he is clearly their best all around defensemen.

Vancouver is without a doubt the worst team in the WHL, and in fact have the worst winning percentage in the entire CHL. No one is going to stand out on a team that is constructed in such a fashion, especially an 18 year old.

He has the potential to be a steal, but I can agree with you that he has not shown it too this point in the season (whether that is a result of his surroundings or his ability is another story..)

He's definitely their best all around dman, but he's certainly not been their best dman. He honestly has been that bad defensively. Now, I think that could be because he's been trying to do too much as he's really the only puck mover on the team, but I'd like to see him work on his play in his own zone a little more. He looked a lot better when he had Musil to cover for him, so I'd guess on a better team his flaws wouldn't be quite so glaring. As I said, he has potential, but he's got a long way to go, and its way to early to call him a steal

I agree with you except for the last line. Can't really have a coming out party after the Memorial Cup last year, can he ?

The biggest steal is Hudon

If there was a redraft today, he would be the biggest riser IMO. Making him a "steal". Doesnt necessarily mean he will be an impact NHLer though.
