The NHL has the best playoff system in sports. No need to mess with that.

I dunno about that. The length of the playoffs alone, takes away from it for me. I would say the NCAA tourment may be the best

Edit: NCAA basketball

I'd be on board with this change - it strikes a balance between rewarding the division champion and controlling for an unusually weak division.

The other thing that has to be done, as long as teams can earn points in a losing effort, is reverse the importance of wins and points. Base the standings on wins, with points as the first tiebreaker.

Beyond that, no changes are needed. We don't need a play-in round; October to April is the play-in round. That said, for those of you just saying that it's stupid and not backing it up, the NHL had a best-of-three preliminary round for five seasons from 1975 to 1979, so it's not like this is something that's just being dreamt up as a way to pry money out of our wallets.

Regardless of the number of teams, I do like the idea of 3-game wild card rounds for lower seeds because it would allow byes for top teams which I don't think are properly rewarded under the current system. Evidenced by the large number of 1 or 2 seed upsets.

Isn't that just evidence that a top seed isn't the same unstoppable juggernaut that it was 10-15 years ago?

The 2005 CBA actually had a clause that allowed the NHL to adopt a 20 team playoff structure, but they never chose to exercise it.

10 teams per conference, where 7v9 and 8v10 faced off in a three game series, followed by the familiar structure of four rounds of best of 7.

Why is there a need to change the NHL playoffs? For me, the SC Playoffs are one of the things that work perfectly fine in hockey - if there is room for improvement (there is in some cases), it most certainly isn't concerning the playoffs.

Additionally: why do teams who had 82 games and finished 9th get an extra opportunity?

We have a similar kind of system in Germany's league (7th vs 10th and 8th vs 9th for the last two playoff spots) and it is one of the things I absolutely despise. Just makes the battle for the 8th place less exciting and doesn't make up for it because the battle for the 9th place is basically only for a "maybe"-playoff spot as well.

18 team playoff = every kid in youth soccer gets a trophy, for just playing.
18 team playoff = teams with .500 or losing record making the playoffs.
18 team playoff = 127 NCAA Bowl games.
18 team playoff = noticing that a lot of the the venue playoff crowd wear the same color as empty seats.
18 team playoff = suffering through the same constantly repeated shrill and moronic ads on the ESPN-7 channel in the wee hours of the morning.
18 team playoff = superfluous money grab from stupid people who have no superfluous money to grab.

Whatever happened to the best playing the best to be the champion?

Actually I was thinking this for this season only, if they do end up salvaging a part of a season.

Oh right. Money.

Having more playoff rounds would help bring in more money, so i can see most of the teams, if not all, being in the playoffs down the road.

TOML
That bracket has Purdue as champion.

The current playoff format is the only thing the NHL has right. The proposal for 18 teams is just to squeeze more money out of the fans since it seemed to work with the MLB.

Might as well just give Seattle and Quebec City a team and make the playoffs a best of 32.

Well, I assume you mean current structure. And that they were wrong in the 47 of the past 70 years when 2/3 or more of the teams made the playoffs.

The playoffs are the absolute best part of the NHL. No need to fix something that isn't broken. Now if you want to complain about the seeding then that's a different discussion. But the amount of teams should not be expanded nor shrunken down. Please. We don't need more changes to this game!

I cant wait until it gets expanded. Just a matter of time before there is 20 teams in the playoffs. Especially with an expansion it will be much needed.

I would be nothing more than a cash grab and another way to make the league an embarrassment among pro sports.
