This is some what off topic, but I was listening to a interview the other day in regards to prisons in the US. To make a long story short the theme of the interview was that America can't afford all the prisons any more. Mostly what was suggested was to stop locking up drug addicts. The basic point is that it is so expensive to just stop people from doing something they want to do. In regards to the lottery, it is a Wild Rose idea that is inline with many libertarian type arguments. Legalize it and tax it. Any way, I think it is a great idea, however, I would extend it to just legalize gambling, drugs and the whole works, then we could fund a lot of things....

Any way, I say go for it.

Wait, I think you have the perfect solution cleverly hid within your post. Legalize marijuana. Only make it available in Rexall pharmacies. New rink built before the 2015-2016 season.

And in all seriousness, it shows in the article the difference between how much Keno makes in Alberta and BC. BC makes a ton off of it, because it is marketed well, and people are aware it helps the Canucks (and I believe the Lions as well). When I worked at a casino, I literally knew one person that played Keno with any kind of regularity, and he played one game, every Friday and Saturday while waiting for the poker room to open.

Beauty. I will give you half credit for the idea The arena would be done in no time.

They could use prisoners to build the new arena. Pay them in cigarettes and conjugal visits.

Works for me. I may be what most call a socialist, but be damned if I don't think that prisoners should be out there working their damn ***** off on public projects. They are in jail to be punished, not sit around all day watching The View.

The ones that excel and are most productive could earn early parole and jobs as ushers at the new arena.

Hold a contest. The best worker gets to be GM of the Oilers, I mean, we can't do any worse. Worth a shot.

I say its a great idea! I have no idea where my lottery contributions go now and this would actually make me spend more on lotteries!

Obviously the only new tax out there that won't offend the electorate is cannabis taxation. It would pay off that arena so fast.

Danielle Smith is a blithering idiot. I'm shocked that anyone finds the crap that she spews worth listening to. This Keno idea is absolutely moronic. Firstly, it's wrong on every single level to exploit peoples' addictions to help a billionaire. Secondly, there's no way in hell that it would generate enough money to cover what's missing.

I love how in such a conservative province, you know if they put up a vote on legalizing cannabis in Alberta it would probably pass with a record turnout of voters.

You do realize that the Jets are subsidized by the province of Winnipeg via VLT gambling revenue right?

I dont know about you but I think this is ludacris!! Why do we need to build an arena for a billionaire and for spoiled millionaires
I've said it before and I'll say it again, not sure how any sort of new lottery is really going to generate a lot of money. It's going to be taking money from the VLT players and putting it into keno. Sure you might do well off the start and get some new people playing, but I doubt it's going to be a huge source of new money.

It also makes lots in BC because all they have is that and Nevada tickets. They don't have VLT's in the bars like we do.

or we can not call people names and go with some calm discussion. We could also talk about the fact that like many things in life, buying a lottery ticket or playing a VLT is a choice.
this isn't specifically playing on addictions ( that very small percentage that does have an addiction would be spending their money or gambling already), but it is offering people a choice. instead ofjust taking your tax dollars towards an arena regardless if you support it or not, you can choose to play this game or not.

Gambling revenue does add funds to charities and also to the provincial general revenue. This lottery would not take away from those monies.

since you feel so strongly about gambling and lotteries, Canadian airlines, do you feel ALL forms of gambling should be banned because some people have problems?
if so, how would you replace the revenue to the government and to the charitable organizations?
Or is gambling ok, and just wrong in this case? if that's so, you really don't care about addictions and just have a problem with some of the funds from this keno game going to an arena. so you're exploting the people with gambling problems to forward the thrust of your rant.

Is the first part true?

As for the second, people just don't realize what gambling and taxes on booze/smokes do for this country. Just imagine the army the Americans could have if they legalized gambling and taxed booze and smokes.

You don't honestly believe this do you?

How is it not going to take away from current lottery monies?

You think the guy that goes and puts $20 in VLT's everyday after work is now going to still put in that same $20 into VLT's and pul out a new $20 to put into Keno?

Or do you now believe that people like me who don't bother with VLT's will now be lining up at the bars to go play Keno?

I don't have any problem with using lottery money like this for public projects however when this new stream of money is going to take away from current monies going to charties(current VLT revenues) and such it isn't really a great idea.

Yeah but not having a public funded health system has to off set those lost dollars no? If anything in the governments favor.

The other thing to keep in mind is there is already Keno in bars on VLT's. And some bars have the Keno machines already. If people were really going to be that addicted to Keno to throw more money it would've already happened by now.
