Went from trying to prevent myself from getting cautiously optimistic to going back and thinking that this is all much ado about nothing in the past two days.

I'm still pretty optimistic since they are so close and to lose the year over the issues at hand are just utterly retarded.

But then again, I'm fully aware that both sides are utterly retarded and know either could just cut the chord for petty reasons at any point, so dunno.

At this point it's not even about negotiations anymore, it's a plain and simple pissing contest between Fehr and Bettman and both should be forced out of their jobs so people who aren't trying to win a #### measuring contest can actually bargain and solve this thing.

F THEM BOTH!

relax, we won't hear a deal is reached until the last possible time. Somehow I think they already work on a schedule or something like this

Hmm, seems like MLB has never been better since the last work stoppage.

NHL could take a lesson from the MLB.

Boomer Esiason just said that NBC paid the owners up front and if this season is missed, the owners have to give NBC a free season in the future which they don't want/can't afford. He said he expects Monday there to be an announcement that the lockout is over and the season will start the 18th or 19th.

Well, if this is true, it's time for Fehr to take them to the cleaners. This is what the NHL gets for dragging this out. Advantage PA and I hope they stick to their guns because it will mean the end of Bettman if **** hits the fan.

Because he works in TV. Is in contact with people that would have knowledge of the TV deal NBC has with the NHL. Someone on here mentioned earlier this week how the NHL was getting pressure from NBC to get a deal done, this is just confirming that.

Teams are signing gigantic TV deals left and right. Something is going well for the league.

You are so clueless.

MLB revenue in 1995 = 1.7bil
MLB revenue in 2010 = 7bil

..enough said.

The steroid era really made the game grow in popularity. It needs to be said because it is a fact. I am on Fehr/players side but let's not ignore the facts about MLB.

2012 WS was least watched World Series in history

MLB is slowly dying ,, Simple reality is that it is close to being #3 sport in US (Actually probably is overall now)

Helped, sure. But it's far from the only reason.

The Wild Card format, new stadiums, Interleague Play, and increased access through TV and the internet helped just as much.

The NHL could only wish it had as much success as the MLB has had.

I'm sure the recession has played a large role in the decline numbers too, but you wold never admit that unless it favoured the owners side.

Recession shouldn't kill TV ratings ,, Gate attendance = Sure

TV ratings = Absolutely not

Also for laughs

The MLB is not dying. One World Series with bad ratings doesn't mean jack ****. A Spurs/Pistons NBA Finals got horrible ratings, but a Thunder/Heat Finals (and certainly a few before) got very good ratings.

The only thing that the NHL can learn from MLB is from how their fans reacted. MLB fans scared the ever-loving **** out of players and owners during the last strike, and they've been more worried about negative fan reaction to another work stoppage ever since.

Meanwhile, the NHL has nothing to fear from its fans because, hey.... let's face it, everybody came back in droves like lemmings once hockey started again. People may ***** and moan now, but when it's put up or shut up time, how many season ticket holders are going to cancel and how many fans are really going to stop showing up once play starts? Maybe in a few markets there'll be a decline, but in Toronto and Montreal and Vancouver and Winnipeg and Chicago and Detroit and Pittsburgh and Philly and Boston and NY there's far more demand than the number of disgruntleds that'll truly walk away for a bit, so they have no reason to really fear. And those that might be on the hotseat will at least get comforted with like greater piece of the pie and some revenue sharing.

Don't confuse baseball's labor peace with the idea that it's run by smarter people.

5 of the lowest rated WS have been in last 6 years

It isn't just one bad series it is a decade long trend of decline

Well, there a lot more options for people to watch on TV now too, Netflix, streaming, on demand, more channels, more shows. It isn't just one thing. MLB isn't as popular now as it was in the late 90's early 2000's but I think other factors also contribute to how sharp the decline has been.

I think it is because people are burned out by the 162-game season. Just my opinion. The popularity is still there.

I'm not positive on this so anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but despite lackluster TV numbers in World Series I recall hearing many times during broadcasts and such that attendance numbers have been as good as they've ever been the past 10+ years or so on average league-wide.

It depends on the teams too. Look on that chart how much higher it was when the Yankees and Red Sox were in it.
