Varlamov will be a franchise goalie in 2 years

Barring the injuries of course.

He's in an incredible form right now dominating currently the best league in the world. .950% SV, is this real life?

Seriously, if Avs improve on defense, Varly will be a Vezina contender for the years to come.

Fantastic trade by the Avalanche

And some people here said Avs made a horrible trade...

I've been saying since day 1 he has the potential to be a franchise goalie. He had a good season for Avs and he's only gonna get even better.

I can't help but think that his time spent with Giggy will be referred to as a defining point in his career. Whether he is franchise or not, he's certainly on a path towards being a solid #1 for awhile.

0.950 is impressive but over the course of just 15 games is a pretty small sample. Didn't Khabibulin have something like that 20 games into last year for the Oilers?

EDIT:
For Khabibulin:
0.957% through 10
0.935% through October/November (17 games)
0.910% through Season

Really mad the Leafs let go of Giggy. It's no coincidence that young starters seem to flourish when he's backing them up. First Reimer (whose play plummeted after Giggy left) and now Varly.

The Avs have a bad defense but they aren't terrible defensively, they just suck because they can't do anything other than play defense.

But the biggest problem with Varly is his consistency.

Sample size is really small.

I think we should wait before jumping to conclusions.

Giggy is a great mentor/teacher. His style is also perfect for younger goalies still learning how to control their positioning and need to refine their technical and lateral movement. Early into the season Varly was just all athletic saves. Then he struggled with that in Nov/Dec.

By late January he was playing a more poised game, which is about the time we heard Giggy complain the Avs had no full time goaltending coach and that we should have one. But management appears to have felt Giggy is the guy for that role and the backup role.

He is pretty young for goalie, isn't he? All of them have this problem at this age.

Have to also factor in that this is the KHL. I'm not saying the KHL is a terrible league by any means, but I would wager that it is at least factoring in some way (Even with many NHL players there, still tad less than being 100% NHL quality competition). Even if the comparable difference would be only a few percent in save percentage, it is still worth noting.

That being said, he is playing unreal, and hope to see him succeed. I do like him.

His talent was never questioned, he just needs to stay healthy like he did last season.

I was a fan of his when he was in Washington already, and thought he should've been the starting goalie there. Everything he's done since has only added to my liking of him, and I fully agree Colorado has found themselves a possible franchise goalie.

I agree with this.

I think Varly's athleticism cant be matched right now. He will stand on his head, making 10 ridiculous saves in a row, but then will let in a softie under his arm. I think if he improves his positioning and stays healthy he will be a vezina contender for years to come. Especially on an Avs team with so much potential.

As an Avs fan I would trade Fillip Forsberg for Varly over and over again. Completely happy with the trade which is not how i felt the day it went down.

Luckily for Varly the Avs have never had a franchise goalie so he won't feel the pressure of being compared to one.

You mean he's actually gonna do good against teams not named the New York Rangers?

Agreed, but then again, the NHL as a whole is a more defensive league and shot blocking is more prevalent. 6 to 1, half dozen to the other.

I'd like to see the Avs take that next big step as well.

It's pretty fun being an Oilers fan in a conference with all these great goaltenders...

The "worst" goalie would be Backstrom and he is absolutely unreal against Edmonton.

Avs can have fun with the demoralizing soft goals.
