This is not a waste of a day in my mind despite no face to face. Long hours spent with mediator tackling unresolved issues.

To recap the day so far: mediator has gone back and forth between both sides, trying to find middle ground on unresolved issues...

They had a chance to significantly improve the offense after being two wins away from a SC visit and they did just that. I don't care if it's a lottery and every team would have a chance to win that number one pick. If there is/was a season the rangers wouldn't have been there and I can live with that.
I know but it's just plain bad luck. Not blaming management here.

It's not really bad luck though. Because they probably would consider where teams finished last season and use that as a measurement for what chance each NHL team would have to draw a top ten pick. The rangers would have a lot less "balls" then the other teams. There is a very good possibility they still end up with a 25-30 pick.

Interesting tweet from a few hours ago by strickland:

Andy Strickland ‏@andystrickland
#NHL players will have a chance to vote on whatever offer exists at the deadline...players give me the impression they'll vote to play

Strickland was the one who broke the richards signing two summers ago. He covers the Blues. Not saying he is always right but he has some sources.

Last time teams started with three balls and lost one for every playoff appearance in the last 3 seasons and every #1 pick in the last 4 seasons to a minimum of 1 ball.

That would give the Rangers 1 ball. There were 48 balls last time, so you're probably looking at ~10% chance that they get a top 5 pick in that scenario.

@mirtle Whatever the escrow ends up being, gotta believe it will be higher if the second year cap is $65M. Teams will spend up, overpay.
True, the higher escrow will in effect be a kind of rollback that season. But since 40% of all the NHL contracts are up for renegotiation then as well, it is a move the NHLPA has to make.
Simple math

It's all a moot point anyway since Pittsburgh will "win" it.

This time around it would likely be the Coyotes.

Last time they were going to rig it for the Rangers until after the fact when they suddenly rigged it for the Penguins.

Well I don't hate the Devils, and that certainly would surprise me. They seem to be getting their ownership situation in hand, this new CBA should help force them to keep their spending in check and go back to their roots, which is growing good players and letting them go at the right time ala NY Giants.

Don't the Devils have to forfeit next year's pick? Or do they still have two more drafts to decide when to do so? Another ridiculous concept...only in the NHL are you found guilty of circumventing the cap, punished with forfeiting a 1st round pick...but then given 4 years to decide when you would prefer to forfeit said pick. lol

I just checked, they can forfeit the pick in 2013 or 2014.

They should have forfeited last year's pick. No way are they picking that low anytime soon.

I agree...but I figured they were holding onto the pick to take Subban. Obviously he was taken 5 picks earlier so they ended up with Matteau.

Maybe. But there will be good goalie prospects in every draft.

How funny would it be if they had a mediocre season this year, take their draft pick, then completely blow up in 2014, get last place...and have to give up their pick.

I would be dysfunctional for a week. Would not stop laughing.

The difference is zero dollars. The revenue cut is set. 50%. $0 over 10 years. Divide by 30 is $0. The cap they are fighting over is for 1 season. Not ten. And still, $0 dollars difference.

They are in fact fighting over the ability of a team to have the right to spend an extra $5m, next season only, to help transition. Not an obligation to spend, and remember, if that extra cap takes too much from revenue, the players return anything over 50%. Hence, a $0 difference. The players want to stay in the city they signed in. Keep a team somewhat in tact. Big teams want to keep their well designed team together. Small markets want an unmolested crack at some top talent.

We are close, this wont stop a season. Unfollow that clown.

While I agree with your analysis and Kypreos is obviously way off, you can't unfollow him - he gets good inside info.

Sure, there are good goalie prospects every year...but it takes a few years to develop them, and Marty is looking at basically 1 more season. The Devils need their next #1 now, but I guess that's their problem. Let them enjoy Wedgewood, Clermont and Kinkaid.

It would be nice if they waited until 2014 and had to forfeit a top 10 pick after not passing on #29. More than nice actually. lol

Being completely neutral here. But Albany is terrible. Kinkaid is pretty decent when the team gets it together.
