Just when you need some pick me up from the current drama-- found this in the archive.
Took this myself from a pre-game practice back in the middle 80's.
So many things here to admire -- no ads on the boards, older style nets, older SMALLER equipment, oh look! A KICK SAVE!!!
You young'ins know about that?
thanks for the pick me up, but it actually has served (through no fault of yours my friend) to depress me even more.
we will never get back to those times. i was just a fan, i didnt know what kind of money anyone made. nor did i care.
I didnt know the Islanders had no money, i didnt know who was the top prospect in th AHL was and if he was going to be a bust.
and I truely believed every year that we had a shot at the cup (well at least we made it to the playoffs almost every year when i was a kid)
now instead of hearing things like : Shot, Save, Fight, during the hockey report, i hear crap like cost certainty , buyout, salary structure. its like being in a meeting at work
oh and by the way i forgot to mention it is a fantastic photo
yeah. nice one. fandom for any sport was simpler for adults and kids 20 to 30 years ago. but then, they were saying the same thing then. i just think it's always been true.

I was young at the time, but I was disgusted when hearing that Betman would be named commish in the mid-90's. I recall hearing how he was first introduced and the goal was to do to hockey what he helped to with basketball.... essentially commercialize it and grow it as a business.
That was the day the pureness of hockey went out the window.
Hockey in warm weather states, annoying music, blue pucks and dancing robots, etc.
The Ranger cup win in 94 only helped to march this sport into the toilet. And now we're left w/a sport with a floundering identity.
Finally, you sure it was a kick save and not Melanson stumbling? Or is that Hrudey?
That's gotta be Hrudey. I thought Melanson was #1. I was a big Rolli fan, thought he was gonna be a great goalie. Turned out Hrudey became the good goalie.

bingo. hrudey. playing goal back then, i wanted to be smith, but was happy when hrudey came along. was more fun to scream "save hrudey!!!" hrudey had a interesting net presence, and was pretty smart too. see below at about 2:16. that hop was to avoid being used to bank in a puck. niiiiice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=NFFd1AYz4zE
even though it's easier to be happy about the 4 cups team -obviously-there was always something to me about that next wave that i liked. those guys had to try to live up to a standard. even though they didn't get the fifth, certain players (pilon, hrudey, patty) seemed like they were islanders because they tried their hardest to live up to that standard... it's been a looooooong time, but i'm real happy JT is an islander. i feel like if there's anyone that can help restore the standard, it's him.

Man watching that video, you forget how GOOD Hrudey was. That quadruple OT win against Washington has to go down as the single best game EVER by a goalie. I think he made 75 saves.
