2013 WHCs to be 2014 Olympic Preview?

Assuming that the lockout is not resolved and we lost the entirety of the 2012-13 NHL season, are there any rules stopping countries from icing in the 2013 World Hockey Championsips what would basically amount to their Olympic roster for the next year (ie. a team of all of their most talented players who are healthy)

Players still will decline for a number of (less than valid) reasons.

So no.

I would think many would take the chance to better their stock for the olympics. Also, if there is no Stanley Cup to chase many players may feel the urge to compete for the second best thing. Of course, older players may just want to rest like last lockout.

Should at the very least be a better pool than in previous years, and should be receiving increased media attention. A little something for the fans when our pining will be at its worst, playoff season.

I would think all the best healthy players will go. Most countries would want to build chemistry with the team

How would the insurance work for players if they get injured during a tournament?

Could be a big risk if the NHL is still locked out and negotiations have moved into the court battle saga.

Ah, found it.

Gonna repeat my argument from that previous thread: If the lockout is not resolved, there will plenty of big guns who have not taken a single stride of competitive hockey all season. They have a very valid reason to decline.

So... no. Won't be the WHC for the ages.

I remember there being big hopes for some Dream Teams in Austria during the last lock-out, which didn't end up materializing. A lot of the elite players are either still not playing anywhere, or playing in the weaker Euro leagues, so they will hardly be in top game shape. The teams will most likely be marginally stronger, but not too noticeably.

It will get a lot more attention obviously. The older players who decide to sit out the season and guys like the Staals who sit out the season won't be playing.

WHC's are different from the Olympics and if the players do get participation then it'll be completely different in some aspects as normally players only join in the WHC if they're out of the play-offs. At this stage in time it's looking like the play-offs will begin in May, or late April so I don't see many players being available.

If there's still a lockout then yes, it could well be.

USA and Canada will still send weak teams compared to their overall ability, so it isn't really an unlikely preview. European nations are also much more likely to miss out on veteran players compared to in the Olympics.

The World Championship during the last lockout was the only one I think the USA ever took seriously, so I hope so.

I think the USA sent a pretty good squad in 04 or 05 , whenever it was. Modano was there if i remember, lots of other good players.

Not really for the NA teams, but probably right for Euro teams.

Brodeur played for Canada at the 2005 Worlds, but in all honesty the players will turn it down for the most part. Many of them did in 2005 and in no way shape or form is a lockout induced World Championship an indication of an Olympic team.

Well, if the season gets wiped out, Hockey Canada has 5 months to redeem themselves and prepare a team for the WHC. My guess: they'll fail miserably. I'm actually starting to enjoy this. Hockey Canada has become a car wreck on the 401. twisted and mangled, blood and guts and ooze. Sorry guys, got to find the humor in all this or you'll all go mad.
