We need more Ottawa defenceman.

Ceci, Methot, Boro, not enough.

Since my last post was a joke post and a pretty dumb one at that, I'll make a more serious contribution because what they hey, you know?

Cowen's injury sucks but it is manageable as a short term problem because we are rich with defensive guys of all ages (Methot, Phillips, Lundin, Borowiecki, even Gryba if it comes down to it, perhaps Claesson or Sdao down the road). Long-term we obviously need Cowen, but that's something we can slap a band-aid on for now.

It's Gonchar's departure, in rapid succession to Kuba's, that is the real concern. Those two combined for 69 points last year.

Gonchar is the only other skilled offensive defenseman we have after precious, precious EK. And that's the bottom line. Benoit and Wiercioch are not options to replace Gonchar in the short term, and probably not in the long term either. Wiercioch might get there eventually. We want someone who can log minutes, play on the PP, and contribute 30-40 points. With Kuba gone, we lack a two-way defenseman, and with Gonchar leaving, we need secondary offense from the blueline. Wiercioch and Benoit simply don't cut it.

I think we need a major piece here. An experienced, two-way, second-pairing defenseman with PP ability, who will stick around for a few years.

Not sure replacing Gonchar will be a big problem if the CBA is signed with a $60M cap for 2013/14.

Murray

honestly how does he still have a job
Yup old Murray should be fired for trading away that superstar Brian Lee. He wouldn't even play in our top 4 with Cowen being hurt. Honestly, what is it with some of you and Brian Lee?

Read the first line of his next post on this page. You should know that Germz is the Jeff O'Neill of Sens board.

But... I like Germz! A lot!

Thanks, Silf. Now I have to do some serious soul-searching and see if I, in fact, like Jeff O'Neill.

So with the lockout ending, what does everyone think are the chances the Sens make the playoffs?

Guillaume Latendresse - Jason Spezza - Milan Michalek
Jakob Silfverberg - Kyle Turris - Daniel Alfredsson
Peter Regin - Stephane Da Costa - Chris Neil
Colin Greening - Zack Smith - Erik Condra
Jim O'Brien / Kaspars Daugavins

Marc Methot - Erik Karlsson
Chris Phillips - Sergei Gonchar
Patrick Wiercioch - Mark Borowiecki
Jared Cowen - Mike Lundin (injured)

Craig Anderson - Ben Bishop

About the same as last year... Not a favorite but more than able to make it

Holes in the roster don't matter that much... Key players make you win, so it will depend on those players (in order IMO)

Jason Spezza
Erik Karlsson
Craig Anderson
Kyle Turris
Milan Michalek
Daniel Alfredsson
Sergei Gonchar
Jakob Silfverberg

5 most important forwards, 2 most important D-men and the #1 goalie is what makes you win.

We have some star power and many wildcards (Silfverberg, Da Costa, Latendresse, Regin, Wiercioch...)

Latendresse could be a 30 goal scorer (in a full season), you have to at least try him on the top 6.

Latendresse-Spezza-Michalek
Silfverberg-Turris-Alfredsson
Greening-Regin-Condra
JOB-Smith-Neil

Methot-Karlsson
Weircioch-Gonchar
Phillips-Lundin

lundin out.

i'm betting on benoit being brought up for that 6-spot and 2nd PP QB duty, though ceci making the team is an alternate option.

I think our chances are worse than last year. Could still be a playoff bubble team. Our blueline is hampered by injuries and the season hasn't even started.
