Note on new #CBA compliance buyouts. #NHL clubs can use the 2 buyouts over the next 2 summers only. Also option to use both buyouts at once

...but yeah, I'd also like to see the exact wording. There may be opportunities for creative management by wealthy teams.

Okay so the buyouts aren't part of the game for years to come? Pretty clear that Gomez stays this year. And he might have just enough of a good year so we'd keep him after.....That's our kinda luck.

The big question that is still yet to be answered.... How many seconds after the CBA is all agreed to and signed does it take for MB to drop Gomez like a hot potato?
Over/Under a heartbeat?

Gomez is the no brainer. Kaberle it depends what kind of season he has. At 4.25 mil it's far from a stretch taht he is worth it and can be traded or kept.

I said it all along - too much pressure on the NHL to get a deal done - no way they were in measure to have the season cancelled.

I can't wait for the 1st game!

Won't be until next summer. The compliance buyouts are only for the summer of 2013 and summer of 2014. No buyouts until July.

the only good thing that came from the lockout from my vantage point was that these dumb Toronto sports station avoided Leafs talk for months. Tunening in to the radio on my way to work and its all Leafs talk mixed in with CBA. Urgh, making up for loss time

I hope Bergevin is a great GM because we are in deep trouble with the cap situation. What makes it suck even more is the fact that we are a non playoff team. I see us being a very youth oriented roster in the next couple years, 16 guys at 60 million, all I can say is wow.

What a way to wake up. This probably has been mentioned, but I'm so happy for a season also because we will have a better chance at a high pick. I also just read that all 14 teams that miss the playoffs have a chance at 1st overall

Yeah? Why wouldn't there be. Devils won the cup in a shortened season in '94.

There also may be the option of retaining some salary in trades... so, something like Kaberle to the Flyers at 3.25mil, the Habs keep 1mil? And use the second buyout elsewhere?

Well, I didn't think there would be a season.

Happy for the fans. But I hope they return to empty arenas.

That would require that a team needs 3 buy outs to make it under the cap next year, which is extremely doubtful.

It won't be very hard at all. Gomez and Kaberle/Markov (if Markov can't survive a 50 game season, it's time to cut ties) out. Raises to Subban/Desharnais. All the other guys we have left to re-sign are going to be on cheap contracts. Throw in some rookies as well and it'll work out. In the 2014 off-season, the other of Kaberle/Markov as well as Gionta come off the books which is another 9+ million right there.

It's really only the 2013/2014 season we have to worry about and with the two compliance buyouts we should be able to fit everything under a 64.3 million dollar upper limit. Desharnais and Subban are still RFAs so they don't have the type of leverage to be asking for ridiculous amounts.

To show the entire NHL that I am not a sucker and they can't take me for granted, I have decided on the following:

For the 1st 5 minutes of the 1st game I will be watching with no volume. Join me to do the same, as our way of showing that we are not sheep that they can slap around like insecure abused women from 3rd world countries.

I think we need to wait for the exact wording of the buyout clause. Can we wait next year for that buyout ? etc. (So it should be treated like an asset.) Gomez is obvious, he's at a point where the NHL is not a sure thing for him in terms of production.
From what Leblanc is showing in Hamilton this year, there's no way he belongs in the NHL. I do like your top-6 however.

Won't be a problem to be honest, Gomez, Gionta, Kaberle, and Markov all come off the books at the end of next season. Plenty of cash and guys like Patches and Price are already signed long term

That will be the easy part of Bergevin's job with those 2 buyouts. Getting rid of a 7.3M cap hit with buying out Gomez fixes that problem in a heartbeat.
