That would happen in reverse, teams not intending on using the buyout could trade for assets in return for buying someone out. It wouldn't be the huge-money contracts though, more like the Matt Walker's of the world.

Keith Ballard is a potential buyout, although I think he will be traded instead.

Good point, but I wouldn't rule out my suggestion...

...are there teams with players they want to get rid of but can't afford it? Lets say that's the case with Lecavalier in Tampa. He would cost like 33m to buyout. Redden in NY will cost 4m to buy out. Would Tampa deal Lecavalier and a 1st in 14' and a 2nd in 15' for Redden and lets say Pyatt? Tampa saves like 29m and Dolan buys 1 year of Lecavalier (he would instantly make the NYR favorites to win the cup) and gets a 1st and a 2nd round pick for 29m (the cost for buying out LeCav in the summer) (yikes that's alot of money... ).

Maybe not the best example, but it illustrates the possibility...

To Tampa Bay
Wade Redden
Taylor Pyatt
3rd round pick 2013

To New York Rangers

Vinny L
1st round pick 2014

Fans might not like this - but owners most definitely will
And they usually get what they want

After this year Redden will be owed $5M and can be bought out by Tampa
Vinny L. still has $45 M on his contract after this season!
They save an awful lot of $$ here!!!
Vinny L is then bought out by The Rangers after this year

FLAME AWAY

why are Leaf fans not excited that Burke can get rid of crap? Lombardi and Komisarek make way too much and the Leafs have tons of cash so get these guys off the freaking cap and go make a good signing or play some kids

Burke can love Komisarek but a 4.5 million dollar bottom pairing defenseman who hasnt worked out is silly. He loved Bertuzzi and bought him out.

We have a lot of defenseman - Phaneuf, Gunnar, Liles, Gardiner, Holzer, Ranger, Franson, and Komisarek.

I hope Komisarek has a good year but if he doesn't, he'll be bought out.

actually nevermind, the leafs wont buy out anyone this year. The buyouts can be used over the next two season right? No need to waste one on Lombardi who is a pending UFA. The decision to buy out Komisarek will happen in the summer.

Leafs have plenty of cap space. We can even acquire Luongo and still be fine this year

can't see the Devils buying out anyone.

only REALISTIC possibility is Volchenkov and I doubt they do that.

Let's see what the details of the buyout provisions are. If the players are getting 100% of their salaries on the buyouts, then for example, the Habs aren't going to buy anybody out until the summer. Guys like Gomez and Kaberle would still nominally have roster spots for this season, just as they did heading into October.

Flip side, if you only had to pay them 2/3rds of their salary, then maybe you could start weighing the value of Gomez as your 3rd/4th line/spare player vs. a rookie or minor leaguer at the $$$ paid out for this year too.

Anyway, obviously Gomez will be bought out in the summer at the latest in order to make the next $64.3M cap. Good motivation for him to bounce back this year!

Players past Gomez, well, it will just come down to how they play this year. Bourque or Kaberle can still have value to the team, and sans Gomez, it will be TBD whether the Habs would want/need more cap space next year beyond his departure. Kaberle or Bourque could prove themselves worth retaining with good showings this season. Or could put themselves forward as options for the 2nd buyout slot as well.

All still assuming the buyouts are allowed anytime up to the start of the 2013-14 season/cap compliance deadline.

Based on information to date, I "predict" no immediate buyouts for the Habs, then. Gomez in the summer.

I'm a Leafs fan and I am happier than a pig in ****. Lombardi isn't an option for a buyout as his contract doesn't extend beyond this season. Komisarek is gone, though. The caps going down and there will be a fresh crop of UFA's. You can sign a better, cheaper player for the bottom-pairing or even go big and grab a top-4 guy with the money saved.

Absolutely not. Why would we trade our captain and a first for money our owner is willing to spend?

I guarantee if Bryz doesn't have a great year, he'll be bought out. It'll be their only chance to get rid of him. Pronger is also obvious. If bryz gets bought out I see flyers going after Niklas Backstrom for a year or two. I'd be all for it even though I think Bryz gets too much unwarranted hate.

Depends on the circumstance. If a player actually is helping the team and not hurting them, with a 70 million dollar cap there really isn't a point. Next year however, that same player would be let go if his team can no longer fit under the cap ceiling.

Google Jeffrey Vinik please, and you will find the reason why this would never happen.

Should buyout Price, too if he doesn't play like a top 5 goalie.
