Pretty sure Hossa would get 2/3s of whats left on his current contract, and then he would also get his new contract, which could make him more money in the end.
No, I think the buy out is like the nba amnesty clause. They get the entire balance of the contract but it's off your cap
I believe Hawkaholic is right which makes sense for Hossa to be one of the buy outs. Hossa was one of the Hawks best players but it remains to be seen if he can pick up where he left off due to the extent of the concussion he suffered. The other thing is that I doubt very much that Hossa will play out the remaining of years of his present contract. Because of his injuries, I doubt he plays more than 2 or 3 years at the most.
There's no way they would ever buy out Toews, and there's no reason to. Hossa might make sense after the 2014 season if they still have the buyout left and he gets injured again. If they plan on using it this coming summer, I wouldn't be a fan of the buyout, even if his performance isn't too great this year.
As far as I have seen it explained, you will not be able to buy a player out and then resign him. That's my understanding.
If you were a player who has been as good as Hossa and has made as much money as him, would you even resign with a team that bought you out and then wants you for less than what your current contract was? I wouldn't resign with the same team.
Leafs aren't that bad now and if they acquire Luongo they likely are a playoff team IMO
not only that, which would obviously be of great benefit to them, but in such a short season, we could see some huge surprises. A typical two week run that teams would have in a regular season could see them jump leaps and bounds in this shortened season. Aside from a few bottom-feeders, I wouldn't be surprised to see anyone in the playoffs this season really.
I wonder if the possibility of being bought out is going to motivate some players to step up this season. It's effectively a contract year for everyone, after all.
Sure, the obvious players should be safe. Toews, Kane, etc. have nothing to worry about. But guys like Crawford, Hammer, and Montador might realize they aren't completely safe and step up their games to make sure they still have a contract with the Blackhawks next season.
Unless the Hawks and Hossa know something that we don't...there's no way in hell that Hossa gets bought out. He's one of our best players.
We don't know the exact wording of the new CBA yet, but if the Owner's included the clause about current contracts of 7+ years counting against the cap even if the player retires then Hossa becomes arguably the most logical buyout. Remember Hossa will be 34 by the time this season starts and still has 9 years left on his contract (and only 4 of them at his current actual salary). Does anyone really believe he will keep playing when he is 37 and actual salary gets cut in half?

The reason you can not resign a player after buying him out is because it makes it easy to circumvent the cap.
Why would Hossa not take this arrangement, Hey Marion what we are going to do is buy you out so you get all your money from your contract plus resign for some more money and they we have extra cap space to improve the team as well.
Also I don't see Hossa getting bought out at all. Now way Rocky pays Hossa 30 mil to not even dress for the Hawks. Plus in all reality after this year Hossa only is a risk for three years after that he only gets a 4 mil salary for one year and then 1 mil per year after that. He becomes a salary cap floor teams wet dream at that point. Cheap owner gets to pay a mil in real money and gets a cap hit of 5.5 mil.
Just way to many reasons why Hossa does not get bought out.
