Bettman has made the owners a ton of money. The fans - as much as people here and elsewhere are loathe to hear it - aren't something he's concerned about, especially in markets like Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, New York, etc. They'll always be there in large enough numbers to keep him in his job.

Did Bettman have any hand in creating the New NHL and ending the clutch and grab era?

Does it matter? He ran the league through both eras. It remains to be seen if the game continues to return to the clutch-and-grab type we witnessed last season.

Are there any confirmed changes other than the draft lottery?

Totally. AV doesn't have a history of slow starts at all...

And Schneider has been lighting it up over in Europe! Or getting lit up. Hmm.

He oversaw the implementation of the dead puck era. Giving him credit for that is like giving him credit for ending three lockouts.

He also oversaw the dismantling and re-implementation of the dead puck era last year, so... maybe next year you can give him credit for ending the dead puck era again?

- 2 Buyouts at the end of this year and the end of 2013
- Can trade $5 mil in cap space... (can't remember the exact details)
- All teams that miss the playoffs have a chance to win draft lottery... no more 4 move limit on lottery, if you win the lottery you get first overall
- Teams can only walk away from arbitration of the award is over $3.5 mil

Uh... no word on Olympics yet...

That would be funny but also very, very upsetting.

good thing Quebec is not in the league anymore. Racing to the bottom can't possibly ever happen again...

Most CEO's last about 3-5 years on the job with a handfull of exceptions. Its the board who decides whom they want to bring in. Alan Zeigler in his day was just a face for a few powerful owners. The purpose of a "commissioner" (like in Baseball) was to act in the best interest of the game as the era of Wirtz and even McNall was clearly over.

The dead puck era is forgotten. Its the lockouts he'll be remembered for.

As for all the new cash coming in I'm thinking the argument is going to be would that money have come in otherwise? The growth of cable/satellite TV happened whether the league existed or not.

Bettman is still in the pocket of some large market owners. Jacobs in Boston springs to mind right away.

I was watching the TSN reporters this morning talking about the end of the lockout, and they were commenting on fans who were angry and wanted to punish the league and the players by not going to games or buying merchandise. I think it was David Naylor who basically said these fans are giving themselves a disservice by missing out on what they love, and they should just get back and enjoy the game, support their team, as if nothing happened.

In other words, Naylor perceives fans as nothing but cattle, and we would be punishing ourselves if we reflect on how we spend our leisure time and re-evaluate our interests. If that line of thinking is prevalent among the owners and the players, than these jackasses would have learned nothing.

Well done NHL and PA for reaching an agreement. A 50 game season with full playoffs should be enough to satisfy fans this year. 82 games is too long anyway.

Hopefully the new CBA results in a league where the vast majority of franchises can be healthy. Maybe if they get the details right this time a labour stoppage can be avoided the next time around, or at the very least, stop either party from opting out after year 8.
