Buyout trade: MON, TBL

Could this work?

MON: VINNY LeC

TBL: Gomez, Markov

Short term, TBL pays more, long term MOntreal pays more but VINNY would be a draw in Montreal. Original thought was TBL throws in a pick and or they take Gionta's contract

If you looking at things long term it's not that bad a deal. Tampa gets a very good albeit injury prone defenseman and Gomez's contract although the cap hit sucks, salary wise isn't terrible all while getting rid of a contract that 2-3 years from now might cause alot of issues.

Why is Vinnys contract suddenly causing issues?

The past 4 years Vinny has been a 60-70 player, right now you could argue for that production he is slightly overpaid in terms of caphit(way overpaid in terms of actual salary), if Vinny loses a step(his PPG average has decreased over that period of 4 years) all of a sudden you have a 50-60 guy who is eating up alot of salary/capspace getting way overpaid.

Basically here is Vinny's points over the last 4 years(pro-rated at 82 games)

71-70-68-63

That's not a good trend

Markov is not an NHL hockey player anymore - his career is over, whether you want to believe it or not. He used to be a very good defenceman 3 years ago.

Gomez is just sucks.

Lecavelier, while on a crap contract, can still play the game to a top 6 level.

So why would TB take on two absolute turds for a decent but expensive player.

VL is not a top 6 anymore, and Markov is better than you give him credit...not to mention VL's contract is way worse than Gomez's....but either way, TB does not do this trade, nor do the Habs...

VL is still top 6 and one could argue very borderline first line. 60-70 points isn't chopped liver in the current NHL but if his production drops then his contract will end up being an anchor to that team for many years

"Trend". What's more likely is that he has remained the 70 point player he has been, but due to his injuries, he's needed games played to readjust before returning to his regular production. You do realize players need actual game time to adjust to game speed before they play like their best self. That is what is clear with his stats - that he has been a consistent 70 pointer with games lost to injury, requiring some games to get back into speed but ultimately returning to regular production.

There is more to the numbers than just the numbers. He isn't losing a step.

So you are saying Vinny is becoming injury prone?

Markov is doing fine in Russia. As is, he would still be a top pairing defenceman on your team. Gomez sucks. Lecavalier is already not worth what he is paid, and he is not getting younger. NEITHER team would do this deal, but with the cap dropping, Montreal would lose this trade significantly down the road. The Habs can buyout Gomez and have no problems for next season, in terms of the cap. I would rather Markov than Lecavalier, at this point.

Calling Markov a "turd" is just stupid and shows a lack of hockey sense. Try to avoid commenting on other teams' players when you are not current on their status.

Markov hasn't played a chunk of games in the NHL in YEARS. He isn't producing much in the KHL. He is post-ACL recon x 2 reconstructions, has been injured numerous times in the KHL which is not even close to the physicality of the NHL. His career is done, whether you recognize it or not.

See? You CAN apply some logic to your thoughts. Now try doing that with Markov.

He's not injury "prone". This is the natural trajectory of NHL players. He is a 32 year old. He's getting injured an appropriate number in accordance with his age. Same issues pop up with Datsyuk and many other players above 30+ playing top 6 minutes (or any minutes for that matter). He's starting to get injured more often, which is expected.

Actually, due to the length f the contract and decrease in point production (for whatever reason) yes, Vinny's contract is worse. Gomez is the worse player, Vinny has the worse contract.

Markov = 2 x ACL recon, hasn't played 65 games in 3 years, 20 games in 2 years. And not even close to performing at a bottom pairing level in the KHL.

VL, while reduced production, still plays 65-70 games per year, at a pace consistent with a top 6 forward.

To compare the two is absurd. One is having a natural over the hump type decline, increased injuries, etc. The other - due to unfortunate circumstances, will not perform at a top 4 level again given his injury.

No interest in this deal from a habs perspective.

Gomez is done this summer and markov has a year and a half to prove himself and see if he's worth resigning again.

Vinny is still a good player, but his contract is just too long.
