Hope not. Still has a ways to on the defensive positioning, active stick work.

I thought Rielly played well in the first 3 games of the tournament but last game was definitely his "off" game offensively aside from making few crisp passes and that one awesome rush.

However, I have been quite impressed with his defensive game, he seems pretty calm and steady in his own end then I have ever seen him before. He hasn't taken much risk in his play like he usually does.

I think it's because he hasnt shown everyone what he can do consistently. I have seen a lot of him, and he looks a bit slower and more tentative than usual. Usually he makes about 6-7 gamebreaking plays a game and now I barely see any. I cant help but think that spott has reeled him in a bit. Not that I mind, the team has been winning.

He has certainly been playing a different role in the WJCs. He normally pushes the pace, dominates the puck, and takes a lot of chances, playing a very offensively aggressive game. In the WJCs he's been toning it down, still delivering great breakouts as well as very good passing in the offensive zone, but he hasn't been trying to take over offensively, he's been playing more of a complementary role. He has been surprisingly good defensively though, better than he normally is, he's been real solid in his own end.

The main thing is that he just hasn't been getting many minutes, little time at even strength and not even much icetime on the PP. I think he's looked great on the PP, but Spott seems to really like having two huge point shots, so he continues to stick with the Hamilton/Murphy pairing. I feel like Rielly has looked way better than Murphy in all situations, I don't really understand why Murphy is getting these minutes while Rielly rots on the bench, but Spott's the coach and that's just the way it is I guess. Murphy has the better shot, but Rielly has been making way better passes, he's been better on breakouts, he's been better defensively, he's just been playing a much higher IQ game, I don't see how Murphy is getting the icetime when he seems worse at everything but shooting.

He had a decent tournament. He showcased his skill a little bit. Murphy and himself were disappointing on Russia's OT goal. All in all, he probably deserved a little more ice time than he got throughout the tournament.

Excited to see him at Leafs camp.

Small chance he makes the team, but who knows, some guys might be rusty.

Gardiner has a concussion apparently so his chances of making the team just went from slim to moderate

Could he make the roster? yes, hes pretty good.
Is it the best thing for him? Not a chance

Hes only had 1/2 to develop in the WHL, let him go back and develop. In a half NHL season all mistakes will be amplified and the stresses on a season like this will demolish development. From watching the WJC (small sample size but w/e) he still has alot of work to do on defensive game. Dont want another Luke schenn fiasco

Gardiner has been out for a while now, and I'm sure he will be ready by opening night.

Gardiner has started to work out recently with no ill effects. Likely be cleared for play soon.

Even with Gardiner out, they have Holzer knocking at the door, and Paul Ranger when he gets signed to a NHL contract.

I disagree, he had an awful tourny. Was a wreck in his own end. He rushed the puck 1 on 4/5 and shot the puck with a soft wrister into the goalie.

He had maybe two good periods of hockey.

He still has loads of skill and showed flashes of his skating and puck moving. He has a lot of work to do tho.

That's correct, his upside looks like he's another John Micheal Liles.

When did Holzer break his foot? He played yesterday against the Icehogs.

Ranger could have signed a contract anywhere and he chose Toronto. I don't know about you but I kind of like the Leafs chances over any other team.

For all we know he's contractually obligated to the Marlies until his contract is up unless the Leafs offer him a deal.

He is an offensive dman that isn't the greatest in his own end, much like Gardiner. He was played very little, and when he was out there, it was with Ryan Murphy. How can you expect him to play defense when his other partner is even worse than he is?

His skill was very apparent, even in the limited ice time he was given.

I don't think he is ready this year, but next year, paired with a defensive dman (Gunnarsson), and you'd have a great pairing.

When Matt Finn eventually makes the jump to the pro ranks, I think he would be a very good D partner for Rielly. Seems to be the kind of D partner that would compliment Rielly's game very well.
