Cherry: CHL should stop letting Americans and Europeans to play in CHL (merged)
True, but after Jr A they move to NCAA taking an American's scholarship and still possibly the NHL.As another poster stated the NHL is 30%(which I find hard to believe) from the NCAA.So maybe these players might be better off in the long run.
They are going to take scholarships from mediocre kids. The best Americans, the ones who are drafted and have an NHL future, heck even the ones who have a U20 tournament future, aren't going to be pushed out by these guys.
It would be easy to solve this problem. If a player does not participate in their national program they are inelligable for international participation.
They tried that with Stefan Matteau and Alexander Galchenyuk and quickly realized it was quite silly and wrong. Simply put, there isn't really a problem
5-1 against Canada and 5 goals coming from NCAA guys. Nobody tell Don.
I would like to see more players selected from NCAA teams. College hockey is better and faster than the CHL. Some of Canada's best performers at this tournament have come from NCAA, but not in the past few years.

CFL football is faster, more exciting and higher scoring than the NFL,but which football is better?

The best teams in NCAA are probably on par with any ECHL team. That includes the UNB's, U of Alberta's etc of the CIS, but Canadian College is older and consists of many former CHL players who have already finished at the Junior level, as 21 year olds. Men vs boys (CHL). Players are bigger, stronger and it's a faster game at the college level.
Great environment (NCAA) for development of 18 and 19 year old talent. Obviously, you have little education when it comes to College hockey!

I was reffering to pro football not college hockey.NFL and CFL are totally different styles of play.As are Canadian junior and NCAA hockey.I do agree that NCAA is probably par with ECHL,except for the amount of physicality involved. Some ECHL games are almost like the movie"Slapshot".

The KHL is a high paying pro league,no comparison.
Is the CHL owned and operated by Hockey Canada? Nope. It may be a junior league, but every team and the league as a whole are businesses, independent of Hockey Canada or the Canadian Govt (aside from the perks of operating a hockey team in Canada).
How about the USHL? Do even smaller countries' hockey leagues restrict hockey players to their country? For example, the Czech juniors let Nathan Walker, an Australian play in their juniors. MHL lets Czechs, Latvians, Slovaks, Belarus(ians?), etc play in it. Swedish and Finnish juniors also take in central/northern Euros.

The OHL is not considered pro by Hockey Canada or the OHF,it is still a development league. The OHF rules and regulations must be followed and any variances must be applied for and aprroved of by the OHF and in essence Hockey Canada. The only reason anyone thinks of it as professional is because of the NCAA restrictions which are unfounded. Please check out the information in the link above the original post.
The CHL also has no restictions on players from the USA as having a shared border eliminates the import rule

Don't forget to mention the numbers: 30% of NHL'ers played college hockey.

Does Hockey Canada finance the entire league? Do they only take Canadian money? Do they only take Canadian employees (coaches, etc)? Is every CHL team even located in Canada? Protectionist logic is faulty.
And how about all those other junior leagues I mentioned?
"I still say the Canadian Hockey League should be for Canadians, either that or change the name. Some Canadian guy spends thousands on sticks, travel, equipment, pays his taxes and his kid is cut from the CHL for some kid who's father never contributed a cent to Canada."
So my tax dollars dont go to protect Canada? Missle Defense isnt free so Mr Cherry dont be silly because Americans do give Canada tax dollars in a roundabout way.
Sure but good ol' Donster has been spewing this same kind of crap for 30 years now and he's hugely popular, what's up with that?
Fox News is hugely popular in the US, what's up with that? Are we to assume that all Americans are a bunch of xenophobic, racist right-wing nutjobs, too?

Don has a point, though he may sound a bit of a bigot. The CJHL is a rooted Canadian league, why should we help develop other nation's players. They don't do this in Russia, Sweden or the Czech republic.
If anything, limit the teams to 1 import, not sure this should this apply to the USA, but it's something worth thinking of. It's the CJHL not the World junior hockey league. We should develop our players first, rather than help develop other nations players for the NHL.

I have no idea who that is. Google says he works for CNN and, with your comment, I'm guessing he's critical of Fox News.
I may be reading too much into this, but are you suggesting Fox News never proposes xenophobic practices or makes racist comments in the same way that Don Cherry does? Is Fox News not the most popular news network in the US?
Just because Don Cherry is popular and makes controversial statements, it doesn't mean most Canadians agree with him.
I've read some melodrama on this board, but this takes the holy gosh darn bakery. BTW, the horrible human being has done more for charity, sick kids and military than most people on the planet. Certainly more than the drug addicted alcoholic in your avatar.
Realistically do you see a CJHL player going over there to play when they can develop in the best developer of the NHL on the planet?
I will take your word on it though, I have never seen a top NA prospect make this choice.
You said help develop other nation's prospects. You didn't say North American prospects. Few North Americans grow to Europe because there isn't really an incentive to do it, but there's no restriction on it. The Russians, Czechs and Swedes all have foreign players in their junior league system. Adding two more Canadian players per team is going to have a completely negligible effect on the quality of Canadian hockey players. It wouldn't even hurt Europeans all that much and might actually be more beneficial to them. The only purpose it would serve is some sort of quasi moral victory.
Would certainly make NCAA and USHL stronger. Not a huge fan of it, but it wouldnt be all bad for non-Canadiens. CHL would get somewhat worse, lowering the level of competition.
