He was shot and killed while performing by a paranoid schizophrenic who believed the band was reading his thoughts and stealing them. That's messed up, and should never happen. (his mother purchased the gun for him, as a Christmas gift...and has since claimed "will never be able to live that down")
Sure, and mental illness should definitely be looked at, too. Still, this isn't a pure dichotomy choice here. You can tackle the gun issue and mental illness, and it's likely that doing both will bring better results than either on their own, perhaps even either combined.

As noted earlier, the idea that those opposed to gun rights want all guns removed from society (or at least believe it's possible to do, anyway) is a strawman. In reality, most people who are not pro-gun simply want stricter regulations, not the outright ban and removal of guns.

As well, regardless of how many guns are currently in the possession of the public, there's most likely still a way to curtail their numbers and usage.

Well, there's no real solution to the cause, if you don't think a solution is "slow[ing] the effect of the problem". As with most any societal issue, the solution typically results in an asemtote, not a removal of the issue completely. Racism and sexism still exist, but they're much lower than they once were. In a similar vein, gun violence still occurs in Canada and the UK and even Japan, but they're nowhere near as prevalent as in the US.

7,000 guns recovered by the Chicago police in recent months
....7,000 guns pulled off the street in MONTHS...and they still hit 500 murders. The cops are doing the best they can, and they consistently pull them of the street...it's just that, well, they're fighting a losing battle....because the fight isn't against guns....these particular sections of these cities are owned by the gangs. Hell, in St. Louis, it's becoming harder and harder to find enough good city cops because it's too dangerous to patrol there.
Think about this for a second, though. Imagine if those 7000 guns weren't off the street, how many more murders might there have been?

I'd also say that I doubt that many guns in these situations are illegal considering just how few laws there are in the US against guns. And, yes, in some cases, if guns are found, they eventually return to those they were confiscated from, even if not immediately.

If they're taking 7000 guns as things are now, I couldn't imagine how many they'd get off the streets for good with any decent gun laws on the books.
