I think that this summarizes it

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/88...ne-irreparable

Quote:
In a presentation made by league executives to both the owners and players on the eve of the lockout, a plan was laid out that explained how the league hoped to add $300 million in new revenues over the next three years. Initiatives like a stadium series of outdoor games would blend returns to traditional hockey markets such as Chicago and Boston while expanding outdoor opportunities to other markets, perhaps coinciding with a national hockey moment like Hockey Weekend Across America. Revenues were expected to grow thanks to international events like a revamped World Cup of Hockey schedule, European markets, digital media and so on.

The message last summer was crystal clear: Things are pretty good, so don't screw it up.

Shortly after that presentation, the league responded by locking out its players for the third time in commissioner Gary Bettman's tenure.

Quote:
Sponsors and partners, such as NBC Sports, were in fact told by league officials, including Bettman, that this negotiation would be a "tweak and a fix."

Quote:
McDonald's (in the United States) was supposed to be a key NHL sponsor with an ad campaign tied to the Winter Classic, All-Star Game and other high-profile events, but it moved on and signed a two-year deal with the NFL after the lockout started.

The lockout also has the potential to set the game back in terms of deals with cable providers and where the NHL Network is carried on their services (if it's carried at all).

What makes this lockout even more mind-boggling is that in the presentation made to the players and to the NHL's owners before the lockout, they were shown the strides the league had taken in a range of areas, including recognition and relevance among sports fans.

That really shows how poorly run the NHL is.

I just can't stop coming back to that fact. No matter what blame the players share during the negotiations of the lockout, the bottom line is that the league has been mismanaged for a very long time and that falls on the owners and Bettman.

edit: also, I would expect top Russian players like Ovechkin, Malkin, and Kovalchuk to come back. I could see guys like Tarasenko and other younger, middle tier KHL stars getting roped in to staying. That's really where the KHL has the most leverage because those guys can be absolute stars in the KHL and make a ton of money, or be just "good" players in the NHL and make so-so money in comparison

Agreed. I also think that Bettman sold some owners a bill of goods that stated that the lockout will not last very long. That is why he told the sponsors that all was needed was a "tweak and a fix". Neither he nor the owners expected the response that they got from the players. And greatly underestimated them.

I absolutely would not want to be the guy for the NHL walking into conference rooms and trying to convince corporate sponsors to partner with my league for the next decade or so. That job would be tough enough considering the NHL's popularity relative to other sports in the USA. It's just made that much harder given the inability of the players and owners to come to a deal in a reasonable manner. You know we're going to go through this thing again in 8 years.

Rupp wearing #17 now

Stralman listed as #6 on NYR website...

Halpern - 15. Pyatt - 14. Asham - 45 (probably for the # of games he'll be suspended this season)

I'm vaguely annoyed at how long it will take for games to get started. After all this lockout crap, another 2 weeks is killing me

I am okay if Asham is suspended for some games this season. The point of that signing was to add grit to the line-up. Of course I don't condone super dirty play, but I would rather this team be the aggressor than the opposite.

I still like the Pyatt signing a lot

Will there be a training camp this week?

Should we start expecting practice updates and such in the next few days.

Agreed, I'm glued to this site right now, can't wait much longer.

reading a ton of Rangers are on the ice. What a beauty site. Includes Nash too. No Gabby yet but likely tommorow

DZ too, good for him he needs to be out there and im sure the contract will get done

Andrew Gross ‏@AGrossRecord
Feels like coming home. At a #NYR (informal still) skate. Richards, Nash, DZ, Boyle, Callahan, Staal, McDonagh, Step, Hags among 15 on ice

Wow - hearing ratification process and legal work on CBA may take a while. Could even be five or six more days.

Looking forward to actually receiving my first season tickets!!

Hoping the schedule does not change too much, tentatively sold some tickets right after the end was announced; also hoping for a start on the 19th since I am out of town until then ;P

If he's suspended, it's hopefully for kicking some guy's ass at the end of a game or something. Nothing dirty.

The Pyatt signing was good. Steady player that's responsible defensively and can ship in some points. He makes the bottom six much stronger.

No. The CBA expired in September. No contract was in effect.

You can't make this stuff up when it comes to the NHL.

Every time the league looks like it's going to make huge strides, getting public attention and finally some big corporate sponsors, it just derails itself.

So, this **** could still backfire? As in the lockout could still happen? Nothing seems done, really?

no no there's a tentative agreement...it sounds like it will ratify without any problems and training camp will be opening by this weekend at the latest. This is just what I gather from the multiple reports out there.
