Marrone officially being introduced now.

I haven't read any real negative comments about this hire. Most everything I've read has either been "great hire" or "give the Bills credit for trying something different this time, not the same-old...time will tell if it works or not." Schefter on ESPN said that he impressed pretty much every team he interviewed with (Chargers and Browns specifically), and that one of his sources felt Marrone was going to be the best HC out of this year's crop of candidates.

Of course, we'll see what results he can get on the field, but it's hard to be unhappy with this hire. Previous HC experience, previous NFL experience, well regarded and coveted by other teams, and picked Buffalo over those other teams...I'm cautiously optimistic about this hire.

Now we need to get a good DC, resign Byrd, Levitre, and McKelvin (who was serviceable at CB as well as returns), get a good draft, and hopefully this team can show signs of improvement next year.

He says in the presser that he wants to get someone with NFL experience for the defensive side of the ball.

Decent impression so far.

I don't think we'll have to worry about a guy from the Bronx being passive on the sidelines either.

Like I said earlier, that'll be my main concern with Marrone. I don't know enough about him or the Syracuse program to really judge if I like the hire or not just based on him coming in, but if he surrounds himself with capable coaches I'll feel a lot better about it.

I was disappointed at first (wanted Smith or even Whiz) but I'm fine with them going in a new direction. HC was a quick pickup, hopefully they can round out the rest of the staff in a timely fashion and start prepping for the draft.

He was the OC for the Saints from 06-08. But we all know Brees ran that show. He was the Jets OL Coach from 02-05. The Jets stunk back then if memory serves.

I think he wanted the Buffalo job, LOL.

Now the people over at BBMB can stop whining about Kelly and they will notice hes not making the jump anyway. It's nothing the Bills did wrong, it was a choice.

It makes sense. Let him try for the HC jobs and give him the best second option.

Doubt he doesn't wind up as a Head Coach somewhere. But I'd do that in a heartbeat

That was when the Jets were actually still relevant (Testaverde/early Pennington years). And they had late-career Curtis Martin who led the league in rushing one of those years.

My god that would be amazing.

I want someone on D who is going to be aggressive. Sure, we'll get burned some, but let the playmakers make big plays. Take some chances.

"We went through an exhaustive and exhilarating search in hiring the right man to build the future and culture of a winning franchise," Brandon said, noting that the Bills and Marrone met as many as five times over the past week. "And we believe we just did that."
Five??? Man, it was clear they wanted him from the beginning then.

Quote:
Marrone, who also interviewed with the Cleveland Browns last week, said his first choice was Buffalo in noting the numerous ties he's had to New York. Aside from coaching the Orange, Marrone was an offensive lineman at Syracuse in the 1980s.

"I had said that the Syracuse job was my dream job, and I meant what I said, and having had the opportunity to restore the great tradition of Syracuse football a reality," Marrone said. "Today, I'm experiencing another dream come true. ... I've chosen to be here. I can't tell you how excited I am."

Quote:
Marrone is described as a no-nonsense disciplinarian. He has seven seasons of NFL coaching experience as an assistant. That includes serving as the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator from 2006-08. He also spent 2002-05 as the New York Jets offensive line coach.
Sounds like Chan, Jauron, Williams and Mularkey!

It would be nice, but it's going to be hard to pull off. Coming to Buffalo to be a DC for a brand new HC vs. being a HC somewhere else is going to be hard to sell.

I think what's telling is Marrone flew out to Arizona to meet with them. You might have figured "oh, it's a short drive down the Thruway, they'll interview him after hitting up Arizona and Denver (since they're still playing)", etc. He really wanted the Bills job that he flew out there for the whole week.

As to whether the Bills wanted him as badly...they clearly thought highly of him. I don't think the number of interviews means they wanted him from the start, but rather as they were narrowing down their choices he kept making the cut, and they probably wanted to go deeper. If anything, it's a good sign that they were diligent and really vetted the candidates before agreeing. I imagine they had multiple meetings with some of the other guys on their radar (notably Whisenhunt, given all the early speculation on how much they liked him).

Oh, and I would hardly call Jauron or Gailey the sort of disciplinarian Marrone is.

They also had Mawae, who's one of the best centers to ever play the game.

Marrone says that he will not be calling the plays. But he will be involved in gameplanning in all facets of the game (offense, defense, and special teams).

Other than that and saying he wants to get defensive coaches with NFL experience, not much of substance in the presser, but meh, par for the course. Talk is cheap anyways.

Chad Pennington years. Jets record:

2002 9-7
2003 6-10
2004 10-6
2005 4-12

All up and down. Curtis Martin always seemed to kill us, though.

I didn't know he did that. I figured they did it via teleconference or something. Face to ace from different destinations.

It was sarcasm, lol

His INT's went down by 7. With the same TD's. that is a bit encouraging. I know he's thrown INT's with the game on the line but what about the D not showing up for tennessee and the second NE game?(He did his part to win those days, they didn't) The Rams game was bad but I still blame Gailey, the whole 2nd half they abandoned Spiller(like in the 4th in Indy and the 2nd half in Houston) The only game I really was mad was the Miami game. Though, Johnson's early fumble may have changed the whol complexion. The blowouts to me are on the whole team.

Interesting, under Payton...Payon called the plays but Marrone over saw it all. I'm surprised he's not following sean's foot steps.

I just hope he doesn't try to make Fitz like Brees. Thats what Gailey did. Guy got way too pass happy. I wouldn't even care if Brees were here, should still be a run first team no matter the QB because of how good the RB's are.
