Yesterday on the way to breakfast me and my 4 year old wore our Blackhawks hoodies, my infant had his Hawks stocking cap on and my wife wore her Hawks baseball hat....ya I was excited.

I've got Notre Dame apparel obligations otherwise, I'd be on that train as well.

All this roster talk leads me to wonder: Who's going to stand in front of the net this year?

Are we just going to hope we can score every goal on pretty plays and tap-ins only to be shut down again by solid goaltending?

Shaw is chaotic 5 on 5 and will do the dirty work around the net on the PP, but it'd be nice to seem someone around the net who is a little harder to push around.

Carcillo and Bickell didn't spend any time around the net last year, neither garnered any real PP time [.20 PP TOI/G] which is where we need net presence the most so why would they be in that role this year?

I'm hoping Saad does it to help establish himself on the team.

Toews is also pretty adept at getting in front of the net. Hayes is a big body too if he makes it to the roster out of camp

Ben Smith did a great job of it in Rockford this year...but I don't think he makes the team.

Oh yeah, he's not bad at it. Better than Brunette was, I thought that would be his specialty but instead of deliberate screening he just seemed to aimlessly float around the crease until a bounce went his way and he then would flub the golden opportunity.

Probably not, but if one deserves a chanced based on AHL performance he certainly does. I'm surprised he's leading the prospects in points 35 games in.

I'll give Kruger that for sure, second half last year he was going hard to the net and got a few goals doing it. We need more of that. We need to screen big time too. Goalies always get a great look at the shot against the Hawks.

From ESPN's article on 10 players with high expectations this season

Corey Crawford, Chicago Blackhawks
The fears of all Chicago fans were realized in the first round against Phoenix when, in spite of outplaying the Coyotes for long stretches of time, the Blackhawks' goaltending broke down and they were ousted in six games -- the second straight first-round departure since winning the Cup in 2010. The blame can't all be laid at Crawford's skates, but two questionable overtime goals that really sunk Chicago highlighted the team's dilemma: Is Crawford the kind of goaltender who can be counted on in the clutch? That question won't be answered early in the season, but Crawford can help his case immensely by turning in consistent, quality starts from the get-go. If not, look for Stan Bowman to search for goaltending help by the trade deadline.

I think I forgot about those OT goals. Those were so awful. We deserved better than a 4-2 loss in that series.

Yeah hopefully Saad will turn into a big net presence. He already has great size for being only 19. Hayes is another guy who could fill that role.

To start the season, I'd like to see:

Saad Toews Kane
Sharp Pirri Hossa
Stalberg Bolland Shaw
Carcillo Mayers Bickell

Keith Seabrook
Hammer Oduya
Leddy Rozsival

Crawford
Emery

I know a lot of people don't see Pirri doing much as the 2C, but he's great in the offensive end, and has been improving his defensive game. Plus he'd have two wingers who play well in both ends, especially Hossa. To me, it seems like Pirri could have a bigger impact than Kruger, but I guess we'll see.

You forgot? Lucky you, I've been bitter about those all during the lockout, it's the last time I saw quality hockey in high def.

Kane/Hossa were pretty damn good, the LW on that didn't have any effect on those two. However, adding an actual scoring threat to the LW on that line would be fun to see.

Still, I'd rather see Kane on the RW.

They really were. Check out Kane's stats before and after the Carcillo injury for confirmation.

OK, totally, let's hold the 94-95 season to the 13 season side-by-side because they are absolutely comparable, especially with those teams and the Hawks. OH, WHAT A COINKYDINK!

Kruger, Shaw, and Bollig practicing at Johnny's today. Guessing they'll be on the roster.

I can't see why Bollig would be on the team, especially if Olesz is on the team.

Olesz won't be on the team. Q likes Bollig's toughness on the 4th line or at least to have him on the roster for when they play teams with bigger tough guys. Carcillo just can't handle the bigger guys anymore.
