Friedman breaks down "cap-recapture system" or penalties involved if Luongo retires before his current contract expires. So it looks like the new CBA doesn't help or hurt his trade value. Am i reading that correctly? Or he goes on LTIR and no one pays any penalties. hah.
Everyone is worried about Lu cap hit after retirement...
Question: Regular buyout options still exist...so seeing as most NHL goalies can keep up a quality game until age 37/39...say Lu plays 6 years in TO until age 39
Why can't TO buy Lu out at the regular 2/3 cap hit at that point??? By then the cap should be at about $73M...Lu buyout hit would be nothing or they could trade him to a team which needs to meet cap floor. Bottom line Burke needs TODAY not to worry about anything else!
I like this a lot. Weise is ideal. He plays centre and wing and also has previous chemistry with Booth. Not a fan of McFarland though maybe Petrovic instead?
Ya I'd love Petrovic but I'm guessing they won't move him. Plus the bonus is that we don't improve Toronto
LOL, some Leafs fans don't want Luongo because they might have a $2 mil cap penalty 10 years from now if Luongo retires early.
$2 mil cap penalty 10 years from now (when the cap could be $80+ mil) > 5+ years of high quality goaltending
Priorities...
I really hope he doesn't go to Toronto.
Same. I'd love for him to go to FLA. he'd be happy there and the Leafs would still suck. We could watch stories all season long about the Leafs missing out on Lu and the Leafs missing the playoffs
I'm hoping that we could resign Weiss and buy out/trade Booth at year end
Didn't Booth have his best year playing with Weiss in Florida?? However I'm sceptical of the Panthers trading Weiss considering he's their best centre.

Doug Maclean said he turned down a 6mil a year offer from FLA in the summer because he's unhappy there. So I'm guessing they'd want to get something for him rather than letting him walk. Half a season left.

If that's the case I'd be ecstatic with Luongo for Weiss swap.
What would be the point of Florida moving Weiss for Luongo? They wouldn't be able to compete in the foreseeable future without him at centre and Luongo would just hurt their chances of drafting in the top 5.
If Weiss wants out, Tallon should shop him for young talent. Would makes absolutely no sense moving him for a 34 year old - regardless of the fact they received good goaltending last season and have a young stud in Markstrom waiting in the wings.
If Luongo goes to Florida it will be for futures, picks and a guy like Upshall/Bergenheim IMO. At least then they could try and win some games in the short term -somethig they won't be able to accomplish sans Weiss...

Put another way, it would like being a fan of a team and watching them in the playoffs in grade seven. You then go through high school and are halfway through university without seeing your team in the playoffs, and the GM of your team doesn't make a deal that could possibly create a less than two million dollar dead space (in present value) by the time you have a wife, a mortgage, one or two kids, and possibly a minivan.

Ok, Luongo isn't completely worthless. I'd offer a 7th round pick ONLY if they include Kesler.
Someone threw a Kadri+Connolly+Biggs+Franson for Luongo and Lapierre. A quantity deal I would make, with Lapierre negotiated out and something lesser in his place.
I would love to see Weiss come back as part of a deal, I know its been mentioned about weiss as a 3rd line C, but with our huge issue with 2nd line wingers, I wonder if kesler or weiss would consider playing wing. I would prefer kesler sliding over because I think weiss is a better play maker.
I am not really opposed to max centering our 3rd with higgins and hansen or getting a chance.
