Just noticed that guys had made a happy birthday thread for me in the summer... Thanks!

Too bad I didn't notice it earlier, I usually try to have a little (often unsuccessful) break from hockey. Now the break has been a bit longer, because of some infamous reason...

Think I might pick up a new stick today.

Also think I might start saving for an iPad. Because spending $1500 in Apple products in the last six months probably isn't enough. But I spend 99% of my home computing time on my phone and it would be fun to have a little tablet.

Decided to go with an avatar again. Probably wait until Parise and Zucker are holding each other after a goal and then go with that for the rest of time. Mmmmmmm....

Probably will be sucked into some sort of vortex with thousands of women or something. Doesn't sound too bad...

Let me know what you go with...

In indirectly related news, I need someone to teach me how to take a slap shot. If I am going to be on D, I need to be able to whack that bloody thing from the blue line and not have it be an ankle biter.

I played for a friend's team last night and despite not having been a part of an organized game in 3 years scored twice and set up another.

That's my brag for the day. On a related note, holy **** I'm sore.

Easier to tip in an ankle biter than one coming straight at your head

Thinking of the Miken Z9. On clearance for under $100. Want to try the BP14 pattern (clone of Bauer P14).

I guess the P14 was based on Scott Bjugstad's pro pattern and his preference. He teaches kids at his shooting clinic to use that kind of pattern for snap shots, so Bauer started ordering more, and it caught on.

Now Scott's with Easton and they just announced their E28 pattern they developed with him. Similar to the Sakic but with a flat rocker near the toe for shooting, kind of like the P14.

I think that flat rocker would help my left to right accuracy, and my ridiculously whippy 55 flex feels great for shooting but is all over the map, so I need to go stiffer but I like the weight of high end sticks.

Yeah.

I can't take slappers, but people seem to think my wrist/snap shots from the blueline are plenty hard enough, so long as I keep them down

The key is to not shoot into the legs of a defender, because the puck will spring off their shin pad and they get a breakaway. Trust me on that one

Oh and ankle biter is exactly what you want most of the time, unless you're stepping up on the PP or have (for some reason) a completely clear shot.

Drive your stick down. It's sounds weird but you want the most flex you can get with the shot. Also you want your shots below the knees, so ankle high shots aren't bad.

As a D-man, you want your slap shots, and any other shots from the point for that matter, to be below the waist. The shot from the point is mostly intended to be tipped by a forward or bounce off the lower pads of the goalie which in turn produces rebounds that your forwards can bang home. If you shoot the puck up, then it is more likely to get grabbed out of the air by any of the defenders besides the goalie. It is much easier to stop something up high than down low.

When you take a slap shot, put all your weight on your front leg (opposite leg of which handedness you are - L leg for R handed - R leg for L handed) and you want to hit the ice about an inch BEHIND the puck creating a flex in the stick with your hands in front of the puck and your body. The flex in the stick will do the rest of the work and you should end up pointing to where you want the puck to end up. Make sure to roll your wrists over on the follow through as well.

My problem on slappers is trying to do too much with the top hand and hitting down into the ice too much. If I could drive my bottom hand through about an inch behind the puck I'd be fine, but I'm so top hand dominant on my wrist/snap shots that I have a hitch in my slapper release and then lose power and accuracy.

That's a cool video. I've seen all those but never in one compilation. I shoot kind of like Kessel. Love Heatley's shot. Just watch that bottom hand drive through. Same with Chara.

I went to the nearest hockey rink about 45 minutes away. Wow. Pretty bad. Watched all levels practice. They have full, pretty good coaching staffs, too.
