I wonder with Buffalo not wanting to waste money, if it's possible that we could maybe pry Regher out of them, and take on Leino's salary.
While the buyout sounds like a splendid idea, it takes actual money to buy someone out. If the Sabres don't want to waste money, and we only have one jobber contract to buyout, maybe it works out where we take on Leino for a season, buy him out along with Horcoff, and end up with a guy like Regher on the backend. If the poster quoted above is right and Regher was on the bottom pairing for that team, I'd love to bring him in if he can be had. Even if that means adding one more bloated salary to the books for one season.

I can't see the Oilers being willing to throw away half or 2/3 of the 18M left on Leino's contract (plus whatever is owed to him this year) just for one abbreviated season of Regehr who is a UFA next year.
I don't think Katz likes wasting money either.

But would Leino at a 3M cap hit work...one of the new provisions in the CBA allows teams to retain up to 1/2 the cap hit remaining
Corey Potter was thrown to the wolfs last year, instead of being brought along slowly. At best he's a 6/7 D and should be played that way. He's been playing in Vienna, so he should be in game shape. Is he a option for the Oillers, no, but you make due until the Oilers can find a gritty RHS Dman, which they need.
The only reason why Potter got a shot last year was because Renney was familiar with him from his Ranger days.
Care to explain why he's getting a shot this year?
Because sadly there are no better options especially with Sutton gone.
If it wasn't apparent already, Tambellini really needs to add a capable defenseman. Just about everything has to go right for this group to even be average.
The only way Tambo knows how to acquire a player is via first overall pick. So if we want a new D man we will need the first overall pick. JONES!
No. I'm sick of losing and I'm sick of clamouring over prospects. This "Oh lets tank" mentality drives me insane. Do you like being seen as the doormat of the league? I don't.

We need veteran d-men anyways.
Just tossing this out there, I think Kubina is still a UFA. What would people's thoughts be on him for a few months? Imo, he'd be an upgrade on our top 6. I be ok with him, if we could get him for a reasonable price.

I believe he signed a 1 year deal some where in Europe.
Edit: He signed HC Vitkovice in the Czech Extraliga.

Yeah but it's the Czech league, according to wikipedia. It shouldn't be too much to buy him out of his contract. Hell, maybe we can even loan them Potter

Maybe a guy like Deryk Engelland is available with all the young defenseman in Pittsburgh.
That would be great. He's tough as nails and is my friend's cousin. While I won't be buying tickets for a while, I would make use of free ones, if offered.
Whitney's injury is chronic. He may feel good now, but I'm not sure he'll hold up playing 4 games a week or 3 games in 4 nights. He may miss games or his injury will limit his range of motions like last year.
Desperately need to sign at least one veteran defenseman.

While I agree with that case, it is an idea I've been thinking about since they announced the 2nd buyout. We'd only use one, so what's to stop Katz from essentially "buying" a young player/prospect from a cheap owner. I bet Wang would seriously consider Potter for Dipietro and a guy like Hamonic.

Kurtis Foster 2.0. If we are going to get better it wont be with leftovers and junk. Tbh, we STILL need to tank another year or two. Sounds ridiculous but it is true. We need to accrue top end picks/prospects that we can use to get a Mike Richards, or a Jeff Carter, or a Keith Yandle.
It is arguable that we dont have the horses to make such a deal now without gutting our prospect pool and/or top five young guns. We need more, so that we still have key pieces after such a deal is made.
Still two or three years away from truly competing and being taken seriously imo.
