Awards:
I'd take

GK: Manuel Neuer
RB: Branislav Ivanovic
CB: Vincent Kompany
CB: Sergio Ramos
LB: Jordi Alba
CM: Andrea Pirlo
CM: Andres Iniesta
RW: Lionel Messi
LW: Cristiano Ronaldo
ST: Falcao
ST: Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Is anyone taking this season's performances into account? Cause to be totally honest if I was Ramos would not be on there and a couple others perhaps too.

Yes this season is taken into account.

GK : Buffon
LB : Cole or Alba (both bring different qualities)
CB : Kompany
CB : Thiago Silva (could be Chiellini)
RB : Lichsteiner
CM : Pirlo
CM : Y. Touré (should be Iniesta here, but I was targeting soemthing more defensive to play with Pirlo)
LW : Ronaldo
RW : Messi
ST : Falcao
ST : Ibrahimovic

No way a lot of players on the actual team of the year should be there, but they are. The beauty of having a difference in opinion.

Lahm didn't have a great season by his standards IMO.
Still IMO the best side back in the game.

Not having Pirlo in the starting 11 is beyond any belief.

He led Juve to scudetto with an unbeaten record and also led italy to euro final.

Taking this season into account.

Casillas- Won Euros and La Liga last season, not as good this season but still deserves it.
Lahm- Lack of great right backs, but he was the best all around.
Thiago Silva- Best CB this year.
Chiellini- Won Serie A, was unlucky with injuries at the Euros.
Alba- Finished last season strong with Valencia, was amazing at the Euros and the first half of this season.
Pirlo- Italy and Juve's best player.
Toure- Scored a couple important goals for City's tile run. Great all around midfielder.
Iniesta- Best player the Euros, great all year.
Ronaldo
Messi
Falcao- Toss up between him and RVP, could go either way.

I don't understand how people can pick Buffon over Casillas when Casillas had both domestic and national success

Even with a not so good season, he is better then Alves as a RB and Marcelo as a LB

That is pretty much the best 11 I would pick.

Because football is a team sport. Individual honors have nothing to do with colletive brilliance.
Do you think Spain wouldn't have won with Buffon instead of Casillas?
Buffon had a better season individually.

Sure, but I didn't pick Alves (who had his worst season in years) and Marcelo (sorry, too much of a ***** and in any case, questionnable defensively).

and you think Spain would've reached the final if it wasn't for Casillas vs Portugal?? maybe, maybe not? sorry I'm not Nostradamus, i don't play the "what if" game, I play the reality game. The reality is Casillas helped Spain and Buffon doesn't play for Spain, he played for Italy which he let in 4 goals in the final.

Look there's no doubt that Buffon is world class, essentially no difference between him and Casillas individually, thus why then the next logical step is to distinguish them by their accomplishments, whether you want to say it was accomplished thanks to the collective unit or not..

How? By performing better over the course of the year.
Heck, he spent 6 months without losing a game. That's how much he helped his team.

My take on a couple of players:

Ramos: Put him there for his performances for Madrid in the first half of 2012 and for Spain in the Euros. Can't stand him, but he easily outplayed Pique in the Euros. Then this season thus far for Madrid he's IMO not been as good. Still I think he has to be in that team.

Marcelo: Similar to Ramos. Quite good for Madrid in the 12 campaign, but what else is there really? Not his fault with injury.

Alba: He's been outstanding for Barça and was excellent for Spain in the Euro. What tips the scale for me though is the performances I saw him put in for Valencia. All around really strong year.

Lahm: Right back, sure put him in. Still I have to consider Ivanovic so long as he played RB the majority of the time. Left back? No.

Casillas: I can see him in the discussion, still I think misses out to Buffon slightly.

Ibrahimovic: Tough to leave him out, but I feel like you have to change the formation or leave Falcao out. Toughest casualty in the team I put up.

van Persie: Actually just as tough leaving him out as Ibra.

Wait a minute, you're gonna come here barking about how football is a collective sport yet attribute Ws as an individual stat to a goalie? Bahahahahahahaha!!!too funny man....how about the fact that Casillas made more saves than Buffon

HOW MUCH HE HELPED HIS TEAM.
It was written man, read until the end.

You ask me how he was better I answered : he performed better.

As for number of saves, I sure hope a hockey fan knows the validity (or lack thereof) of GAA and save %.

How did he help his team anymore than Casillas helped his and how did he perform better than Casillas? Your answer was that Buffon didn't have an L in 6 months and I pointed out how ridiculous that is using your own arguments . Thus I pointed that individually Casillas had more saves, which is a better standard of measurement. Yes and as hockey fans we should know that sv% are a heck of a lot more important than Ws which is what you were basing Buffon's individual superlative as...

I said he performed better and that resulted in being unbeaten for 6 months.
Number of saves is completely irrelevant to the discussion.

Buffon was better because he performed better. Either you agree or you disagree, but I'm not sure how it's supposed to be proven except by obviously watching the games.
