I'm uneasy about Marty this year for the first time in a while. I hope he doesn't have that "well, I'm 40, what do you expect?" mentality in the back of his head. He needs to channel his inner prime if we're going to make the playoffs.

I honestly don't know if he plays both.
I think he plans to play out his contract. And we still have confidence in him. His reactions are slower, and he gives up too many soft goals now, but he is still a solid goalie and I wouldn't have anyone else in the playoffs.

Apparently not. And from the way some posters assign ridiculous values to our other players on the trade board, they didn't watch our forwards or defencemen either.

A Question About Future Goalers

A Leafs fan, coming in peace with hat in hand to ask you gents a question.

I heard that Marty Brodeur has 2 more years left, as does Hedburg. Now, if/when Marty retires, who will get starting position?

Being unfamiliar with the Devil's prospects, I do not know if any of them are starter caliber, or if Hedburg's going to have to carry the weight for a bit. Or if that's not an option, are plans in order to acquire a different goalie?

I am curious to see who or what will replace Brodeur, and was wondering if you guys had any idea.

Time will tell.

The hope is that one or both of Kinkaid and Wedgewood will pan out.
Wedgewood is a decent puck handler, so we're hoping he can eventually take Marty's place.

But, we have 2 years, and if it looks like our 80 year old goalie tandem can't handle the load... the UFA market will have to suffice.

Right now it's pretty much a waiting game.

No one seems to realize how old Hedberg is. He's older than Marty, isn't he?

My hopes are pinned to Wedgewood becoming something.

Agreed.

It's been said here a few times by a few people, but nothing would make me happier than if the league removed the trapezoid after Marty retires.... and Wedgewood comes in and takes over the roaming goalie territory seamlessly.

Jersey numbers beginning of season 1996/97

Season 1996-97 Lyle Odelein's jersey number was 24. But Steve Sullivan ??

I'd expect 30 points with a low positive in +/-. Maybe 2 PPG. He should be a solid fantasy player but nothing special

I wouldn't expect another top 10 finish from Elias this year, but mid 30s might be possible depending on who he lines up with and at what position. Hard to say until after training camp.

Steve Sullivan was the man. I was sad when we traded him (although psyched we got Gilmour (but ultimately disappointed with Gilmour's tenure in NJ)). I think it's great how he'd still get cheers in NJ years later.

Clarkson: Expected to regress? Last year was an amazing year for him from a Fantasy perspective. To get those G, PP, SOG with the PIMs- off the charts value. What do people expect for this year?

What he showed last year was what he has had in him all along, but for a couple of different reasons in previous seasons, he wasn't able to reach his capable level

First year or two he was a bottom line guy but still putting up nice numbers given his ice time
09-10 he was playing very strong but missed most of second half with an injury
10-11 we got off to a horrible start and nobody's offensive numbers were good

Some expect him to digress, but I disagree because with Parise and a couple of other offensive guys out of the picture, Clarkson will get more time in the top 6 and on the PP which could/should help him stay at the same pace, he'd be a good pickup in fantasy in a deep leaue

Clarkson shot above his usual shooting percentage last year, but it was still only 13.2% which isn't astronomical. One might also expect him to score on more shots with all the time he spent on the first power play unit.

PP time is likely going to be a big factor in his points. If he makes it into the first unit, he could have another great season. If he ends up on the 2nd (which is more likely with Zajac back, I think), he'll probably drop off a bit. He'll still be good for PIMs and hits while putting up some goals, though.
