if this roster stays healthy and plays how they can there is no reason to believe that this team doesn't make the play offs
There is every reason to believe this team won't make the playoffs.
The defense after Streit, MacDonald, and Hamonic is horrible. Carkner isn't a make or break player, Donovan is a rookie, and Martinek (if he is signed to a contract) will be nothing more than a #5 defenseman. Hamonic is also hurt, so he may not be fully effective this year.
I have no faith in Bailey. The team still lacks a 2nd line center that can jump start the offense unless Strome has an immediate impact but he's also a rookie. Boyes in the bottom-6 would be completely ineffective.
And Tavares telling management that he wants Strome on the team should have no impact on whether or not he actually does make it. Strome needs to impress at camp and show management that he belongs. I don't know whether or not he does, but Tavares just telling management, "I want Strome here" isn't good enough.
Grabner won't work on line one he's is too fast for jt and Marty ice, he showed that last year Boyes or KO It will be IMO other than that like them
I remember Grabner scoring a nice goal playing on a line with JT, but yes Boyes or Okposo would be a better fit. If Garth gets a 2nd line center or if Strome is ready, I wouldn't mind seeing Boyes on the 2nd line with Strome and Okposo plays with JT.
As an outsider I can tell you that the more I see of Frans Nielsen the more I am impressed by his play. He just seems to be able to do whatever the team needs.
It would be great to see him on the 2nd line and generating some offense as well as some league wide recognition.
Guy doesn't get enough kudos IMHO
Too small, no shot, not talented enough for a 2nd line player; not enough offense.
But there are very few players as smart and positionally sound as Frans. He can play with anyone and make them look good because he covers up for so many of their mistakes and poor decisions. I don't think Grabner gets a contract without Frans.
He's a player I would never trade and I'd want him even on the 4th line.
But he's not a 2nd liner in a winning team. Not unless he's paired with two all offense players.
I don't think it is as simple as that. There are probably very good reasons for the non-invites and it probably has to do MORE with the half season than it is about them being good or not good enough.
It's a half season, why not give some other players a chance to show what they got at this level. The team is confident they know what to expect from Nino and Donovan. I think they want to see what ullstrom and casey does for an extended call up and to give opportunity to people like Landry and even Wishart to show what they can do with regular minutes with nothing on the line. Isles are NOT going into this season to win..they are going into this season to develop. They are making the best of what would be a crappy season...to be honest...I think management are kinda hoping for a shot at Seth. In the process, helping to dev some players that would normally not get such an extended callup.
