The issue isn't Redden playing on the Rangers or in the AHL. Its what will Redden do. If he sits out the season at 35 years old and having not played in the NHL for 3 years, his journey to play in the NHL again becomes more difficult. He will be 36 this summer. Redden is allowed to terminate his contract and become a free agent. Sign with another team. Sather would give Meehan permission to gauge any interest from other teams. It means walking away from decent bucks.

The fact that they gave stralman his # I think is a pretty strong sign that they don't plan on bringing him back even with the cap hit counting

Exactly. Would you forfeit 10 milion dollars (knowing that you will be receiving the money for sitting on the couch) just for the chance to play somewhere for 3 milion dolars (risking injury, embarassment etc.) even if there may be teams willing to give you a chance (Philly?) ?

I think we are stuck with Redden, he won't play anywhere.

Looks like Redden will count against the cap if I'm reading capgeek.com/twitter correctly. Maybe he'll get an invite to training camp?

Hehe - I'm not saying that he should be with the NYR, just saying if they're paying him anyway, they might as well have a look.

If he is injured he can't be bought out. I don't see the Rangers risking it. They'll probably just tell him to stay home entirely.

Any chance Redden voids his contract by not reporting so he can play this season and not sit on the couch for another year. Then try to make a comeback.

Its less than $10M. $2.5M and change for 2013. The amnesty buyout is $3,333,333.

What is Wade Reddens future? If his salary counts against the cap, its seems like a waste not to use him this year as a 3rd pair dman. Buy him out in the summer and let him go on his way.

Katie Strang (1:10 PM)

The Rangers could buy him out and likely will. In fact his agent is sitting down with Glen Sather today (not exclusively about that, Newport also reps Michael Del Zotto) so we may gain more clarity on the matter soon.If Redden wants to collect the money he is rightfully owed, the Rangers will buy him out BUT they will likely prohibit him from playing in AHL this season so as to avoid injury. So, if Redden wants to play in the NHL again -- hard to do with significant layoffs in two consecutive seasons -- it is possible that he could void his contract to try and get another shot as a depth defenseman elsewhere.

The numbers I get for Redden would be him "losing" $3,048,780 for this year and $3,333,333 for next year by voiding the contract a la RB. Roughly $6,382,113. Minus the escrow for this year and next.
I do think he will void his contract and try to sign elsewhere for 2-2,5 M per.

In that case he will just lose less than $2M and considering he has been paid $29M already here in NYC, plus his ELC with 3 years @ $850.000 (2,55M), plus $3.57 M per year for 1999-2001 ($7,14M), in 2001-2003 @ $2,8M per year ($5,6M), in 2003-2006 2 years at $4,5M per (9M), and 6,5 per in 2006-2008 ($13M). Wade Redden has therefore in addition already made $37,920,000 BEFORE coming to NYC. So in total (before escrow, taxes and agent fees) Wade has made around $67 M as an NHL player in his career. Not exactly chump change...

Del Zotto had no specific update, but said he believes a deal will be done. I do as well, and have been saying so...

As for Redden, well...

Rangers management were meeting yesterday with representatives for the 35-year-old defenseman, who spent the last two seasons AHL with the AHL’s Connecticut Whale, to determine a course of action. If he is waived again before opening night and not claimed, Redden’s cap hit of $5.875 million would be included in the cap. Under the new CBA, contracts over $900,000 can no longer be “buried” in the minors. A buyout of his final season in his six-year deal couldn’t occur until June.

DZ can't re-sign until the CBA is ratified.

If a team liked what they saw in Hartford, I think he could get a $1-1.5M deal somewhere. If he can rebound, then he could likely make up most of what he would be forfeiting with us. It really depends on where Redden thinks he's at and what other teams think of him at this point.

My best guess is that in the meeting Sather said exactly what Strang laid out, but allowed Redden and his agent to gauge interest around the league if they wanted to. It's not like interest from another team will change what the Rangers do with him.

The NHL is usually a 186 game season. How many days will the 2013 season be? 48 games is 58.5% of the 82 game season. Days are used to determine the cap hit. In 1995,the season went from January 20-May 3. 104 day season. That's $2,795,699 of the $5M salary. Add the $3,333,333. $6,129,032. That's what Redden is owed. He loses $1,666,667 in the amnesty buyout.

Redden avoided losing money in escrow the last 2 seasons by playing in the AHL. The players didn't lose that much in escrow.

Zipay is using the Larry Brooks numbers.

Minimum salary plus $375,000. Its $900,000. Anything above that counts. $5.6M. The minimum salary increases in the agreement so that number will increase.

See Brooks got it right after using the different number of $5.875M.

The Redden cap hit against NYR this year will be $5.6M presuming he is waived out of NHL.

Ah, I counted games and not days. You are, of course, right here. Makes it even more likely he might just walk away. Imagine that. We buyout Richards & Gaborik next year (after winning our Cup) and sign Getzlaf & Perry in the offseason for same $$$ instead.
THAT would be something, not gonna happen though...

Agent Don Meehan is expected to be in New York today to meet with Rangers’ general manager Glen Sather in regards to Del Zotto, who is a restricted free agent and still doesn’t have a contract.

It is thought the two might also discuss the future of Wade Redden, the beleaguered defenseman who played the past two seasons in the AHL. Whether Redden plays at all this year, he will carry an adjusted $5.6 million cap hit once he clears waivers again.
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/range...ontent=Rangers

Craig Custance reported the meeting was taking place yesterday. Could be today. I read Meehan has a meeting scheduled in Montreal tomorrow with Marc Bergevin regarding PK Subban. Newport Sports also has to get Ryan O'Reilly a contract.

I was watching Sportsnet last night. Doug MacLean said he heard Getzlaf was close to signing a 7 year extension with Anaheim before the lockout. $6.2M per. $43.4M. It could happen when the CBA is ratified and the lockout is lifted. Anaheim may have been hoping for the 5 year contract limits so they wouldn't give Getzlaf 7. The new CBA allows Getzlaf to get 8 years.
