You act like Detroit would get those lucky picks every year.

If the Wings knew that Dat/Zet would turn out so good, do you really think they wouldn't had picked them earlier...I don't want to call every 6/7 round pick as a shot in the dark, but it's not like Detroit had a 50% superstar chance there..

Yeah, he's a hard one to judge, what with the age, contract uncertainty, and incredible skills. Along with the fact he is usually the favorite Red Wing, I just cannot see it happening. Maybe if DET is out of the playoff picture at the deadline this year or next, but who truthfully believes that will happen?

Just thought it was worth pointing out that they took Dats and Zetty in back to back drafts in the 6th and 7th rounds and they both turned into exceptional players. Clear good fortune obviously. But id put money on the fact that there probably hasnt been another team to draft two players so close together, that late, and have both of them become such proven players. Ignoring the fact that the flew under the radar all the way to the back of the draft.

Quite the anomaly if you ask me.

Then the pens offer you the 6th and 7th round picks in 2013 and 2014. Must be a fair deal then.

This is the most common misconception amoung Red Wing fans, it isn't going to happen again. Too many teams are scouting in Europe now.

The prospect pool is deep with 2nd and 3rd liners but nobody that will be nearly as good as Datysuk or Zetterberg. Don't even get started on Brendan Smith being the second coming of Lidstrom. Iron Hook may have a decent chance but I wouldn't be getting my hopes up.

Like the thoughts that are here

I doubt it ever happens again to any team, let alone to detroit for a second time aha

Don't you mean Datsyuk+? Why not forget Datsyuk and go after Malkin with that package?

I always hear rumors about Malkin wanting out of Crosby's shadow in Pittsburgh. If Datsyuk wanted to jump ship to a younger contender, I could see a deal being made.

There would be a HUGE + on Dats.

Not only is Malkin better, but he's almost a decade younger

I think the Wings would do that.

Girardi-Kronwall would be solid

i understand that he is a fan favorite and that he still has his touch but you wouldn't trade him for Ryan O'reilly?......seriously? i think the value of Datsyuk for detroit is dare i say.......overated(i mean that in the nicest way possible)

I doubt Dats is traded.. but something like that yeah.

Someone else than Girardi though. He's solid, very solid but if we trade Dats we are going for rebuild and that means going for little younger talent.

ROR's current situation lowers his value a bit.

ROR+ imo would be enough value wise but I think we could get better offer. Wouldn't make sense for Colorado to trade ROR for this and next season of Dats anyway, they have just finished rebuilding and aren't at the top yet.

Less than Malkin. But it doesn't matter, because won't happen...

haha yeah if you look at my previous reply, i said that colorado would be stupid to trade for him. i was just giving my 2 cents on what i thought datsyuk was worth

Holy crap, someone who actually analyzed Detroit's needs and put together a solid package? If Dats were on the chopping block, this would be the deal to beat. The Wings get a shutdown top pair dman, a young playmaker with top end potential, and a first rounds pick to add to the prospect pool.

Considering we don't know:

1. If Datsyuk will really come back
2. If Datsyuk will sign a new deal in NA

I would take about half of these offers and run.
