And on that point, my last, I see where some of the separation begins.
At 5.3M I can only imagine Luongo being a discount on that figure for 3-4 years MAX. He may match that figure but by no means perform better then it. Thus I see him declining somewhat around 36/37 from elite status.
With that being considered, 3-4 years of advantage, maybe 2-3 years of debatable market value leaves about 4 years where he will perform below that cap hit. Say he retires before the contract is over so 3 years. Plus 3-4 years of a dead cap space penalty and you have about 6 years where the cap hit versus his ability would be a detriment versus 3-4 years of real value.
Not what I would consider fair or not even the slightest problem.
What if nucks throw in some cap space and bring Luo's hit down to 2.375
Yea...no I'm not. Lu is a game changer for any team lucky enough to acquire him, to say other wise is ridiculous.
He sure is... for another year or maybe two, before his play starts declining? This isn't a 25-26 year old elite goaltender we're talking about here. Roberto is 34 years old and his last showing in the playoffs wasn't exactly inspiring.
Supposedly Brian Burke said no to the Kings regarding Johnathan Bernier. Interesting but not all that surprising, considering we have a Bernier clone in James Reimer.

But you forget, as the cap goes up, his % of cap goes down, and he still becomes a better deal and does not have to continue to be a top 5 goalie in the league.

What are you talking about, he currently leads all NHL goalies in all major goalie stats.

(D) Jake Gardiner
(C) Nazem Kadri
(C) Tim Connolly
To Toronto Maple Leafs
(G) Roberto Luongo
(F) Mason Raymond
(F) Zack Kassian
Vancouver 4th round pick 2013
If so.. Vancouver agrees.
Really? I say no, Kassian for Gardiner is a wash, but we don't need Gardiner as much as we need Kass, and Kadri Connelly for Lui and Raymond is terrible.
Not trading Kassian. Everyone talks about how small, weak..etc we are. Not going to trade the Power Forward we traded Hodgson for. Goes DIRECTLY against Gillis' idea of a bigger team.
Also:
@benkuzma
Schneider on possibility of having Luongo at camp: "The best guy will play and there are worse things in the world than having ...
@benkuzma
... a world-class goalie pushing you and forcing you to be at your best. Roberto and I have dealt with this for two years now ...
@benkuzma
... we're not unfamiliar with the scrutiny and pressure and whatever you guys want to call it. We respect each other."
&
@benkuzma
Schneider on not knowing who is backup may be: "It's never awkward. It's a label that people put on it. I'm a pretty affable guy ...
@benkuzma ... Whoever does come in will be to my benefit and you can learn things from anybody. I'll just wait and see what happens."

He is 33 right now, which makes your statement incorrect.
Also, if we were taking age to seasons, this would be his 33 year old season, not his 34 year old season because he turns 34 in April, 7 months into a given season.
